The Thunderbolts movie introduced beloved characters in an amusing yet troubled group, which is set to appear in future Marvel stories. One of these stories is Avengers: Doomsday, and a brief glimpse of this event was shown during the Thunderbolts’ post-credits scene. Director Jake Schreier shared some insights about the movie’s home release, hinting at a potential new leader for the team and offering a peek into the experience of seeing the Thunderbolts cast on the set of Doomsday.
The Russo Brothers are overseeing both Doomsday and Secret Wars, and according to Schreier, Yelena Belova actress Florence Pugh made a fitting comparison when describing Schreier’s experience watching the Thunderbolts cast perform that crucial scene for Doomsday.
Speaking about it, Florence remarked humorously since she was present during the filming of the post-credits scene, yet her role was merely as an extra in the background. She described the feeling as similar to being taken to school by a parent and waving goodbye with a reminder to do well and study. However, in reality, most of these characters were conceived prior to her arrival, which she believes is simply how such fictional universes operate. She added that the Russo brothers have truly excelled in this cinematic sphere.
Schreier mentioned that he finds these movies entertaining because they have a unique style and setting that sets them apart. He was curious if they could move the characters from their previous versions into new territories, creating a sense of intrigue where viewers might think, “This seems strange at first, but it just might work.” He emphasized that this journey won’t be easy or straightforward; instead, the excitement comes from watching the unexpected unfold.
That day on set was particularly enjoyable for me since our film was significant, yet within a larger universe filled with various characters. Witnessing these characters in their context added an unique excitement, making the experience distinctly different. I’m eagerly anticipating the unfolding events.
A Potential New Leader
After the Thunderbolts have been officially rebranded as the New Avengers, and with Doomsday bringing them more into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Schreier was inquired about who he thinks could potentially lead the New Avengers if he had to speculate. While there is one individual who seems like an ideal choice, that’s by no means the only possibility.
Schreier expressed that what makes these characters intriguing is the possibility for anyone to envision themselves as the leader, and he finds it fascinating to observe this dynamic unfold. While Bucky seems like a likely choice for leadership, it’s not a role he appears comfortable with. Each character seems to believe they should be in charge, and they all offer unique qualities to the mix. However, Schreier admits he has no idea who will ultimately take on the role, and he’s excited to see how these characters interact and compete.
Thunderbolts* is available on Digital now and will be released on 4K and Blu-ray on July 29.
