For several years, Hollywood has been relying heavily on reboots and revivals, bringing back popular shows and movies from the past in hopes of creating new hits. While this trend has mostly focused on television – with shows like Night Court, iCarly, and the upcoming Scrubs revival – movies have also joined in. Last year’s The Naked Gun, starring Liam Neeson, was a popular example, and now another Neeson film that’s a reboot is leaving Netflix soon, so you’ll need to watch it quickly.
The 2010 movie The A-Team is a fresh take on the popular 1980s TV show. Both the movie and the series center around a team of highly skilled soldiers wrongly accused of a crime, who break out of prison to prove their innocence. The film stars Liam Neeson, alongside Bradley Cooper, Jessica Biel, Quinton Jackson, Sharlto Copley, and Patrick Wilson. It will be leaving Netflix on February 16th.
The A-Team Movie Didn’t Win Over Critics, But Found Fresh Success on Streaming
The 1980s TV show The A-Team was a pop culture hit, but the 2010 movie wasn’t nearly as successful. It didn’t make much money in theaters, ending any plans for a follow-up, and critics generally found it to be just okay – even for a typical summer action film. What worked as lighthearted fun on television didn’t translate well to a longer movie format. The film did receive some positive attention for its action sequences, as long as viewers weren’t expecting a compelling story.
The movie wasn’t well-received by the original actors either. Though a few made brief, almost unnoticeable cameo appearances, Dirk Benedict, who played Faceman, felt his was too short and disrespectful. Original fans were also disappointed by the limited involvement of the show’s original stars.
Despite its initial box office performance, the movie became incredibly popular when it arrived on Netflix last October, quickly rising in the streaming rankings and attracting a new audience. This highlights how much people enjoy nostalgia in entertainment, and how appealing it can be to see a fresh spin on a beloved classic. While the movie didn’t quite capture the magic of the original ‘80s TV show or launch a franchise, it’s a fun, action-packed film perfect for a relaxing day – and it’s leaving Netflix soon, so don’t miss out!
