Timothée Chalamet Officially Confirms Dune 3 Is His Last One (& It Means a 50-Year-Old Paul Atreides Story Won’t Be Used)

As a film buff, I’m really excited to see Timothée Chalamet back in the Oscar conversation for 2026! He’s already been nominated for Best Actor and even Best Picture this year thanks to his work in Marty Supreme, but honestly, he’s been a strong contender for a while. I remember being blown away by his performance in the biopic A Complete Unknown, and of course, Call Me by Your Name was a stunning indie film that really put him on the map. And let’s not forget Dune: Part Two – he was fantastic in that epic! It’s clear he’s a really versatile actor who consistently delivers great work.

Following the 2026 Oscars, Timothée Chalamet will continue working on upcoming films, including Dune: Part Three, which began filming in July. With the awards show nearing, Chalamet is currently promoting the film and has revealed that Dune 3 will be his final appearance in the Dune series.

Timothée Chalamet recently participated in a CNN & Variety town hall with Matthew McConaughey. While he remained tight-lipped about the plot of Dune 3, he did talk about what it was like making the movie. It was while discussing how Dune 3 differed from the previous films that Chalamet revealed this will be his last involvement with the series.

I didn’t want to take a single moment for granted. Knowing this was likely my last Dune film, I approached it with a deep sense of reverence. It’s easy to become complacent, but I felt a greater urgency on this third film. It felt like the natural flow was to relax, so I deliberately pushed myself to do the opposite.

The next Dune movie, Dune: Part Three, will be based on the second book in the series, Dune Messiah. The story picks up with Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, who has been emperor and a religious leader for over ten years. During this time, he’s turned the Fremen people into a powerful, devoted army, and their religious fervor is spreading throughout the galaxy. This worries other powerful groups – like the Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild, and the Tleilaxu – who start plotting to overthrow or kill Paul. Internal conflicts also arise within Paul’s own family, as his wife, Princess Irulan, and his lover, Chani, struggle for his attention and the future of his lineage. The story builds to a major conflict that will ultimately decide who controls the galaxy.

Filming Dune 3 was likely a unique experience for the actors. The story, based on Dune Messiah, delves into some of the most imaginative and complex ideas from Frank Herbert’s novels, and sets up an even more fantastical narrative in the third book, Children of Dune. This includes a storyline where the desert planet Arrakis is transformed into a green world, and Paul Atreides and his family begin to merge with the planet’s spice and sandworms, evolving beyond humanity. While the story of Paul’s children and sister (introduced in Dune: Part Two) could allow for a fresh start to the film series, it doesn’t seem like Timothée Chalamet will reprise his role in Children of Dune. Considering the story takes place many years later, and Paul’s character arc, a recast would be perfectly acceptable.

Timothée Chalamet hints that Dune: Part Three will be even more ambitious and visually stunning than the previous films, thanks to Denis Villeneuve’s direction. He described the upcoming installment as having a unique and unsettling atmosphere, emphasizing the creative freedom they had during filming. Chalamet believes the film will truly deliver on the scale and imagination fans expect.

The release date for Dune: Part Three is December 18th. Join the discussion with other fans on the ComicBook Forum!
