At this year’s Savannah College of Art and Design Animation Festival, Ozlem Akturk, co-creator of the popular series *Tiny Chef*, talked about the show’s success. She and co-creator Rachel Larsen have experienced a whirlwind of events lately, including the recent cancellation of *Tiny Chef* on Nickelodeon. Akturk also mentioned the record-breaking success of the anime film *Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle*, but expressed concern about the compensation received by the manga artist, Koyoharu Gotouge, despite creating such a popular and influential series.
Ozlem concluded her talk by asking the audience if they had seen *Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle*, and most responded positively. She then voiced support for the series creator, Koyoharu Gotouge, explaining that artists sometimes don’t receive fair compensation for their work and need strong legal representation to protect their projects. While Gotouge hasn’t publicly discussed her earnings from *Demon Slayer*, recent reports about the financial arrangements surrounding *Demon Slayer: Mugen Train* have upset many fans.
The Demon Slayer Controversy
A recent report uncovered that Koyoharu Gotouge, the creator of *Demon Slayer*, received less than $20,000 USD for *Demon Slayer: Mugen Train*, which was once the highest-grossing anime film. Many fans were upset by this, considering the film made hundreds of millions of dollars. While it’s currently unknown how much Gotouge earned from *Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle*, fans hope she received significantly more compensation this time around.
While money is a major concern, difficult working conditions are also a big problem in the anime and manga industry. For instance, animators on the second season of *Jujutsu Kaisen* at Studio MAPPA reported feeling a lot of stress while creating the show. The industry has improved in some ways recently, but further changes are still needed.
I’m absolutely blown away by how well *Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle* is doing! As of today, it’s already made over $550 million worldwide! That puts it way ahead of most movies released this year, and it just shows how huge the demand for anime is, not just here in North America, but everywhere!
