Christine Dawood is sharing harrowing details about the aftermath of a devastating tragedy.
Almost three years after the OceanGate Titan submersible imploded, taking the lives of five people including Christine’s husband, Shahzada Dawood, and their son, Suleman Dawood, she shared the painful experience of receiving their remains after the tragic accident.
It took nine months to receive the remains,” Christine explained to The Guardian in an April 25th interview. “I say remains, but it was really just a small amount of material – it arrived in two boxes about the size of shoeboxes.
She explained that very little was recovered from the wreckage. The U.S. Coast Guard had examined the debris, but found a large, unidentifiable collection of DNA. They offered her some of this mixed sample, but she declined, stating she only wanted the remains positively identified as her son, Suleman, and her husband, Shahzada.
June will be the three-year mark since the tragic event, and Christine has kept her husband’s study and son’s bedroom exactly as they were. She also mentioned that her son Suleman’s impressive 9,090-piece Lego Titanic model is still on display in her kitchen, untouched.
People are usually surprised when they see it, she said. But she couldn’t just dismantle it or keep it hidden. Suleman had spent so much time building it, fueled by his lifelong fascination with the Titanic, which began after they visited a large exhibition while living in Singapore.

Christine, who lives in Surrey, UK, with her daughter, is 20 years old, and is dealing with grief. She’s discovered that acknowledging her sadness is helpful, though it’s still a challenging process.
I often go into Suleman’s room. Sometimes I’ll find the cat asleep on his pillow, and I’ll sit on the bed and allow myself to feel sad. After a while, I’m able to cope with the sadness until it overwhelms me again.
She explained that while she’s spent a lot of time processing the loss of her son, Suleman, she’s only recently begun to fully grieve for her husband. She emphasized that although people often speak of them together, their deaths—ages 19 and 43, respectively—created two distinct kinds of sorrow and two separate relationships to mourn.

The Titan, a submersible operated by OceanGate Expeditions, went missing on June 18, 2023, while traveling to the Titanic shipwreck with five people on board. After a five-day search, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed on June 22nd that the vessel had suffered a catastrophic implosion, resulting in the deaths of all five passengers.
Oh my gosh, Stockton Rush… he was the pilot, you guys! It’s just… incredible. He started OceanGate way back in 2009, in Washington, and he was always, always about pushing boundaries and exploring. I mean, the man was 61, and he openly talked about wanting to be the first person on Mars! Can you believe that?! He just wanted to be known as someone who changed things, an innovator. It’s… it’s just so tragic. He lived for this kind of adventure.
Besides leading expeditions to view the Titanic’s wreckage, Rush had a personal link to the 1912 disaster. His wife, Wendy Rush, is the great-great-granddaughter of Ida and Isidor Straus, who perished on the ship.

British billionaire Hamish Harding announced on Instagram on June 17th that he was joining the expedition, just one day before the submersible began its descent and was lost.
I’m excited to share that I’ve joined the @oceangateexped team as a mission specialist for their trip to the Titanic! Because of unusually severe winter weather in Newfoundland, this dive is probably the only crewed mission to the Titanic this year. The weather is finally clear enough, so we’re planning to attempt the dive tomorrow.
According to Action Aviation’s chairman, Harding, the team began their journey from St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada, and intended to begin diving operations around 4 a.m. on June 18th. He noted they had significant preparations and briefings to complete beforehand.
He previously explored the deepest point in the ocean, the Mariana Trench. In a 2021 interview with Gulf News, he described the experience as being in an extremely harsh environment, and said it was amazing to be one of the first humans to reach the Challenger Deep.
The businessman, based in Dubai, was a passionate adventurer. He flew around the world with the One More Orbit project and, in the past year, even traveled to space on a rocket from Jeff Bezos’s company, Blue Origin. He shared this love of adventure with his son, Giles, who his Instagram profile describes as a young explorer.

Shahzada Dawood, a businessman born in Pakistan, and his 19-year-old son, Suleman, who were both British citizens, were also lost in the tragedy.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve learned a lot about families and their passions. The Dawood family is a prominent and very successful one in Pakistan – Shahzada Dawood is a key leader as vice chairman of Engro Corporation. It’s particularly heartbreaking to learn his son was a student at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, pursuing his education when this tragedy occurred.
Azmeh Dawood, Shahzada’s sister, told NBC News that her brother Suleman was hesitant about the voyage. He confided in a family member that he felt scared and didn’t want to go, but he ultimately decided to join the trip to the Titanic wreckage to make his father, a Titanic enthusiast, happy for Father’s Day.
The Dawood Foundation expressed deep sadness over the deaths of Shahzada and Suleman Dawood, who were lost aboard the Titan submersible. In a statement, the foundation asked for continued prayers for their souls and for the family as they grieve this difficult loss.

According to a representative, French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet was also on board the Titan submersible. Stockton Rush had also mentioned Nargeolet as part of the team in an Instagram post.
According to the Times, Paul-Henri Nargeolet was a leading expert in maritime matters and a former member of the French Navy. The 71-year-old was a dedicated Titanic specialist who had visited the wreck site 35 times. He also directed RMS Titanic, Inc., the company responsible for researching, recovering, and exhibiting items from the ship.
Alongside fellow passenger Hamish Harding, he was a member of The Explorers Club, founded in 1904.

As Harding mentioned, the Titan was a submersible used on OceanGate Expeditions tours to visit the remains of the Titanic, the famous ship that sank in 1912.
Oh my god, this is just… heartbreaking. OceanGate released a statement, and it just gets it, you know? They said those men weren’t just passengers, they were explorers – real adventurers with this incredible love for the ocean, for discovering things and protecting it too. It’s like, they understood what those guys were all about. They said their hearts are absolutely broken for those five, and for their families, and honestly, me too. It’s just… they brought so much life and happiness to everyone, and now they’re gone. It’s just awful, truly awful.
