Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Being in Avengers: Doomsday Instead of Tom Holland’s Would Be an Insult

I loved Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man growing up, and I get why fans want to see him back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, replacing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man with Maguire in a potential Avengers: Doomsday movie would feel wrong. There’s been talk about Maguire appearing in the next Avengers film, but it’s still just speculation. Considering the movie will explore the Multiverse and bring back characters from different franchises – even the X-Men films! – it’s definitely possible we could see older versions of Spider-Man make an appearance, though.

Okay, so there’s this rumor going around – and honestly, it seems pretty fake – about a leaked Spider-Man figure. It started because this insider, Daniel Richtman, mentioned back in November that Tobey Maguire might be involved in the next movie. Now, some fans are even saying Maguire’s Spider-Man could replace Tom Holland’s! I really hope that’s not true. Tom’s Spider-Man has been amazing, and he deserves a better fate than just being replaced in what’s supposed to be his big movie. I love Tobey’s version too, but swapping him in for Tom in Doomsday would be a total letdown.

Tom Holland Should Be THE Spider-Man of the MCU (Until His Newly Reset Story Is Over)

While Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man is fondly remembered, Tom Holland’s portrayal feels like the right fit for the current Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly with the upcoming ‘Brand New Day’ storyline. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ effectively gave his character a fresh start, aligning him more closely with the Peter Parker we see in the comics. With his past essentially erased, Holland’s Spider-Man offers Marvel a lot of exciting possibilities. It wouldn’t make sense to give Maguire a significant role in future ‘Avengers’ films if it meant hindering Holland’s developing story, which is becoming increasingly complex and interesting.

Tom Holland is currently the primary Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so his story will inevitably connect with the larger Avengers narrative. While the Avengers may not recognize him, this creates potential for both funny and emotional scenes. It would be a missed opportunity to introduce high stakes – especially just to make a cameo by Tobey Maguire happen, which might be challenging anyway. Spider-Man: No Way Home already gave Holland’s Spider-Man a satisfying conclusion, and trying to do more could be a gamble.

No Way Home Was Great, but More Appearances From Toby Maguire & Andrew Garfield Are Risky

Fans are really hoping to see Tobey Maguire return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, likely because his appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home was so well-received. The film’s multiverse storyline allowed both him and Andrew Garfield to give their versions of Spider-Man satisfying conclusions. Their meeting and help to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker created a genuinely touching moment. Now, with the MCU planning another big crossover event in Avengers: Doomsday, it’s possible we could see them again.

It would be incredibly difficult to surpass the impact of their return in Spider-Man: No Way Home – perhaps even pointless to try. The film struck a perfect balance between satisfying fans and giving both characters a meaningful conclusion. It even showed Maguire’s Peter Parker happily settled with MJ, and highlighted his choice of forgiveness over vengeance against the Green Goblin. It felt like a truly fitting farewell, and it’s hard to imagine where the Marvel Cinematic Universe could realistically take the character next. Any further appearances would likely feel forced and solely cater to fan expectations, something Doomsday already appears to be doing in abundance.

If Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Appears in Avengers: Doomsday, It Needs to Be Alongside Tom Holland (& in a Smaller Role)

Okay, as a huge Spider-Man fan, bringing Tobey Maguire back would be awesome, but it’s also a little scary. If Marvel does go there with a big team-up like Avengers: Doomsday, they absolutely have to include Tom Holland’s Spider-Man too. Seriously, leaving him out would feel like a slap in the face and wouldn’t make any sense. Even if the multiverse somehow makes people forget him, his Peter Parker wouldn’t just sit back when the world is in danger – that’s not who he is! I think Marvel can make it work with both of them, but Tobey should definitely have the smaller role. He’s kind of passed the torch, and it’s Tom’s time to be the main Spider-Man in the MCU now. Let Tom shine!
