While the last season of Game of Thrones was widely criticized, the franchise has bounced back thanks to HBO. Just three years after the original series ended, House of the Dragon premiered and has remained popular despite some gaps between seasons. HBO is also developing another Game of Thrones series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. And now, there’s even more good news for fans: HBO has confirmed that more Game of Thrones content is on the way.
HBO started the day with several exciting announcements, including positive news for fans of Game of Thrones. The popular prequel, House of the Dragon, is still set to return for a third season in the summer of 2026. Plus, HBO has confirmed that there will be more Game of Thrones content coming over the next three years, ensuring fans won’t be without new stories from George R.R. Martin’s world.
Game of Thrones Continues to Expand at HBO

Okay, so good news for all you House of the Dragon fans! I just learned from HBO that the show will be back in the summer of 2026 for another season, and even better, they’ve already greenlit a fourth season set to arrive in 2028. There’s been a lot of speculation about how long the series would run – some reports suggested five seasons, others thought four – but HBO isn’t telling us if Season 4 will be the last just yet. And honestly, if they did know, they’d probably let us in on it, right?
Some fans might be disappointed to learn there will be a two-year wait between seasons 3 and 4 of House of the Dragon, worrying that 2027 will be a year without any new Game of Thrones content. However, there’s good news! HBO has already greenlit more episodes of House of the Dragon and also renewed the upcoming series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for a second season. The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will debut in January 2026, and the second will follow in 2027. This means that while there might be some breaks in the schedule, fans can expect a Game of Thrones series to air every year through at least 2028.
“We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the Game of Thrones universe,” Francesca Orsi, EVP, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said in a statement. “Together, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R. R. Martin’s universe continues to be. In January, I think audiences will be delighted by the inspiring underdog tale of Dunk and Egg that George and Ira Parker have so beautifully captured. And this Summer, House of the Dragon is set to ignite once again with some of its most epic battles yet.”
As a huge Game of Thrones fan, I was really excited to hear about the two new shows HBO announced, but it sounds like that’s not all! Apparently, they’re still developing even more spin-offs. I’ve read that one could be about Aegon Targaryen’s conquest – with the writer from The Batman working on it, which is awesome – and another about Nymeria, a legendary Dornish ancestor, potentially called Ten Thousand Ships. Honestly, it feels like we Game of Thrones fans are getting everything we could ask for right now!
