Today Is a Very Bad Day for Paramount+ Subscribers

The recent merger between Paramount and Skydance has created a lot of buzz in Hollywood. While the long-term impact is still unfolding – especially considering Paramount’s previous attempt to buy Warner Bros. – things are starting to become clearer. Paramount has been actively securing talent, recently signing the creators of South Park to a deal worth over a billion dollars and also bringing the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer brothers, over from Netflix. Now, news has surfaced about a significant departure from Paramount that is likely to concern current Paramount+ subscribers.

Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone, is reportedly planning to move from Paramount to NBCUniversal once his current contract ends, according to Puck. While this might be good news for viewers who enjoy his shows, it creates a significant challenge for Paramount Skydance, the company’s new content venture, and its future programming strategy.

Paramount Is Losing Its Biggest Creative Force

Taylor Sheridan’s departure from Paramount is huge news for Hollywood and will likely reshape the future of Paramount+. While the original series Yellowstone has finished, its connected shows – including the earlier stories 1883 and 1923, and the new series Y: Marshals – became central to Paramount+’s streaming lineup, especially after Peacock acquired the rights to the original Yellowstone starring Kevin Costner. Sheridan wasn’t just focused on the Yellowstone universe, though; he also created or co-created popular shows like Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Landman, and Lioness. Essentially, a significant portion of Paramount+’s content came from one person, and now he’s leaving the company.

Despite the recent news, there’s still reason for fans to be optimistic. Taylor Sheridan is still contracted to Paramount through 2028, so he’ll continue working on existing shows, with new seasons expected in the next year. Even after his deal ends and he moves to NBCUniversal, Paramount will retain the rights to all of Sheridan’s shows, including Yellowstone. However, this raises a key question: will viewers continue to watch these series without Sheridan’s direct involvement?

Most viewers likely won’t care who makes the show as long as their favorite actors are still on screen, but it’s uncertain if those actors will stay with shows now that Taylor Sheridan is no longer involved. This news also raises questions about what Paramount+ will become without Sheridan’s popular shows. He’s responsible for the majority of the platform’s scripted content, with big franchises like Star Trek and NCIS making up most of the rest. Paramount might have to rely even more on those franchises going forward, potentially leading to more spin-offs and reboots of older properties like Fatal Attraction and Sexy Beast. Right now, Paramount+ hasn’t changed, but it could look very different in the next few years.
