Tom Fletcher calls Paddington Musical songs the best he’s ever written: “For Paddington, they had to be”

The Paddington musical is about to begin! Previews – early performances open to the public – start this Saturday at the Savoy Theatre.

Paddington, the famous bear who loves marmalade, is coming to the London stage! He’ll be joined by a fantastic group of musical theatre performers, including Bonnie Langford (known from Doctor Who) as Mrs. Bird, Adrian Der Gregorian as Mr. Brown, and Amy Ellen Richardson as Mrs. Brown.

With the show just around the corner, many details are still secret, like what the main bear character will look and sound like. We also don’t yet know what kind of music Tom Fletcher from McFly has created for the soundtrack.

We’ve heard short previews of two songs – “The Explorer and the Bear” and “Pretty Little Dead Things,” performed by the actress playing the villain, Millicent Clyde (Victoria Hamilton-Barritt). However, the remaining music from the project hasn’t been revealed yet.

He believes Paddington is a character who feels like he’s always been with us and always will be, and he wanted the music for the film to have that same lasting quality.

I aimed for a show that felt current and competitive with modern musicals, but I also wanted it to avoid feeling trendy or quickly becoming outdated.

It’s difficult to say if I succeeded, but I really wanted these songs to be the best I’ve ever written – Paddington deserved that much.

The singer and author began developing the project five years ago, and immediately agreed to participate when first asked.

After initially feeling a bit panicked about whether I could pull it off, I just concentrated on the source material itself. I started drawing inspiration from the books and films, and surprisingly, it didn’t feel difficult at all. Because the original material was so strong, I always knew what direction to take musically.

He did mention one small problem while writing: a film crew for “Paddington 3” set up shop in a field just 20 meters from his house while he was working.

I was writing a musical when I found out they were filming a scene with the marmalade machine in Peru – just a short distance from me! I was pretty surprised to see Paddington and Aunt Lucy were actually there.

The singer hasn’t had much downtime lately, as he’s been busy touring with McFly and Busted. However, he’s thrilled with how the show turned out. “It’s incredibly exciting,” he said with a smile. “Seeing the posters around London is surreal, especially now that everyone is talking about it. We’ve all put so much work into this, and it means the world to us.”

We were responsible for caring for this bear, as indicated by the tag around its neck. Over the past five years, we’ve all focused on preserving and protecting this incredible story and the bear’s unique personality as best we could.

“So we’re very very excited for everyone else to to see what we’ve done.”
