Tom Hanks’ New World War II Series Officially Comes Out in 2 Weeks

He’s known for his work on World War II films, including the 1998 blockbuster Saving Private Ryan and the 2020 Apple TV+ movie Greyhound. He has another war film coming out very soon – in less than two weeks!

The new project isn’t a movie, but a World War II documentary series coming to the History Channel on May 25th. Titled World War II With Tom Hanks, the series has 20 hour-long episodes and will begin with a three-episode launch. It will be available worldwide in 200 countries and translated into 40 languages.

What Is World War II With Tom Hanks About?

This new docuseries offers a fresh look at a conflict that shaped the last eighty years, presenting a realistic and modern perspective on the war.

With Tom Hanks, a longtime history enthusiast who has brought this period to life in his iconic film roles, as narrator, this series presents a fresh look at World War II. It covers the entire conflict, from the beginnings of fascism in Europe and the attack on Pearl Harbor, to the fall of Berlin, the bombing of Hiroshima, and the difficult years that followed.

The first episode, titled “The Beginning,” covers the start of World War II with Germany’s invasion of Poland. It details the rise and eventual defeat of the Axis powers, focusing on key battles like Stalingrad and Normandy. The episode also examines the immense human suffering caused by the war, including the Holocaust, and highlights acts of civilian resistance.

Tom Hanks remembers growing up hearing about “The War” constantly. He explained that the impact of World War II on both the world and his family was always clear to him, which is why he’s partnering with the History Channel on a comprehensive new series about it.

Tom Hanks Isn’t Done With Historical Projects

Tom Hanks’ new documentary series, World War II With Tom Hanks, is just the beginning. Having previously starred in ‘S’ and co-created the acclaimed HBO war drama, the actor has several other historical projects planned.

Tom Hanks is revisiting his role as Captain Krause in a sequel to his World War II film, Greyhound. Filming began in Australia in late February, and Hanks also wrote the screenplay. The story picks up with Captain Krause and his crew after the Normandy landings, following them as they contribute to the war effort in the Pacific.

Tom Hanks is set to star in a new historical and political drama where he’ll portray Abraham Lincoln, the 16th U.S. president. This role is a first for Hanks, who has never before played a real American president. Interestingly, Hanks and Lincoln share a family connection – they are distant cousins through Lincoln’s mother, Nancy Hanks, making the project even more compelling.

World War II With Tom Hanks premieres on the History Channel on May 25.
