Tom Sandoval Teases His Second America’s Got Talent Performance

Tom Sandoval is ready to wow the America’s Got Talent judges once again.

Following a successful first audition on the NBC reality competition series, as seen in the June 24th episode of Vanderpump Rules, alum Tom Sandoval and his band, Tom Sandoval & The Most Extras, received critical acclaim. In anticipation for the season 20 quarter finals, the ex-SUR employee shared his plans to further impress the show’s judges with his performance.

During an interview with Today on August 13, Sandoval hinted at a significantly larger and more extravagant second audition for their band, surpassing the scale of their initial performance.

After attempting to play A-ha’s popular ’80s song “Take on Me” for the first time, the 42-year-old expressed that his group won’t limit themselves to performing only ’80s hits. Instead, they plan to offer a diverse repertoire of classic songs spanning various music genres and decades.

In addition, Sandoval contemplated the judges’ comments, particularly when Simon Cowell pointed out that his singing wasn’t stellar, which fueled his determination to put in extra effort as he gets ready to step back on the America’s Got Talent stage once more.

Noting that he took Cowell’s words “to heart,” he admitted, “I could always be improving.”

And working on his vocal skills is something Sandoval has put a lot of time into.

Reflecting back, when we sang that song a couple of years ago, we had to lower it by half a step initially. But with time, I grew comfortable enough to return it to its original key. Therefore, hitting that high note became a significant achievement for me, symbolizing my conquest over a considerable obstacle.

As for what potentially winning season 20—and the $1 million prize—would mean to him?

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I must express that such an occurrence would truly be exceptional! While it’s an incredibly long shot given the abundance of talented acts, I couldn’t help but feel immense joy at the thought of their success. It would be a double celebration, not only for them but also for myself as a fan.

Contestants face a multi-step process before they perform for the judges during season 20. The judging panel consists of Howie Mandel, Mel B, Sofía Vergara, and Simon Cowell. To reach a wider audience, NBCUniversal holds open call auditions virtually. Anyone can sign up, get screened by the casting team and producers, and if deemed worthy, move forward to the executive producers. If approved, they progress to in-person or virtual auditions with the judges, from where things unfold further. Aspiring contestants can apply through in-person or virtual open calls or video submissions.

Make sure you’ve got your timers ready! The guidelines indicate that during the open calls, people get approximately 90 seconds to exhibit their talents. However, it’s important to keep in mind that producers retain the right to adjust the audition time if necessary.

Indeed, several items are restricted, you might say. For example, during open call auditions, “open flames and special rigging” aren’t permitted. If an act involves animals, competitors must complete an Animal Information Form and bring the animal’s vaccination records. Moreover, acts using coolers (unless for medical reasons), fireworks, weapons, sharp tools, mace/pepper spray, illicit drugs, alcohol, or props requiring fire or pyrotechnics are not allowed as per the rules.

If contestants advance beyond the preliminary rounds in America’s Got Talent, they won’t have to shoulder the costs of travel and accommodation for their audition before the judges. The show covers their airfare, bus or train tickets, or gas reimbursement (for driving), depending on their location. They also receive hotel lodging and a daily stipend for meals and other expenses during this phase.

The guidelines for America’s Got Talent auditions state that the show doesn’t offer hair and makeup assistance for contestants during the initial judge’s round, but they should be ready to appear on camera. However, for later rounds, these services are provided. During season 19, for instance, AGT’s makeup artist Tonia Green revealed on Instagram that she worked with numerous contestants on their hair and makeup.

During the rehearsals, contestants get a chance to practice their acts. However, it’s not just about running through performances; they also have something called a “results rehearsal.” In a 2024 YouTube video, Sofie Dossi, who competed on three seasons of America’s Got Talent, explained this. The results rehearsal is for everyone to know their places if eliminated or if they advance, and it helps the staff determine lighting and camera angles.

In simpler terms, the winner of America’s Got Talent receives a grand prize of $1 million, but instead of getting the full amount immediately, they have the option to receive it in installments over 40 years. This means that if they opt for this payment structure, they will receive approximately $25,000 per year before taxes for four decades.
