As a movie fan, I’ve noticed that when the year’s biggest box office hits are tallied, you rarely see romance films up there. It’s usually action blockbusters, huge fantasy series, or family-friendly animated movies dominating the charts. That’s why I always find it fascinating to dig a little deeper and see which romance films actually did perform the best – it’s a fun surprise!
Romance movies had a strong year in 2025, particularly because many successfully combined elements from other genres like horror, fantasy, and drama. Several films earned awards consideration, some surprised everyone with their box office success, and overall, they all attracted a good number of viewers.
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey – $22.3 Million
The 2025 romance film, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, quickly gained attention thanks to its stars. Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell are both highly successful and well-known actors in Hollywood.
It seemed like a winning combination, especially with the captivating story of A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. The story follows two strangers who meet at a wedding and embark on an adventure where they revisit key moments from their past, with the potential to alter their destinies.
The film earned $22.3 million globally, which wouldn’t be bad for some movies, but meant A Big Bold Beautiful Journey wasn’t successful. With a production budget of about $45 million and only lukewarm reviews, the film was a general disappointment.
Together – $32.3 Million
The 2025 horror film Together offered a fresh take on blending romance with another genre. The story follows a couple who seek peace in the countryside, but their lives are turned upside down when they face a strange and powerful presence.
The merging process is physically disturbing to watch, with bodies combining and characters having to painfully separate themselves by cutting off limbs. Though it’s definitely not a feel-good romance, the central relationship is actually the most important part of the story.
The film Together explores a complicated, co-dependent relationship, but at its heart, it’s a love story between the two leads, who happen to be married in real life – Alison Brie and Dave Franco. Despite dealing with difficult themes, the movie proved to be a financial success for an independent project, earning $32.3 million.
Heart Eyes – $33.1 Million
The new horror film, Heart Eyes, takes a very different approach than Together. It’s an unusual mix of slasher and romantic comedy. Every Valentine’s Day, the killer in Heart Eyes targets and murders couples.
The mystery in Heart Eyes revolves around a killer who mistakenly targets two people who aren’t a couple. Ally McBride (Olivia Holt) and Jay Simmonds (Mason Gooding) are arguing coworkers who try to resolve their issues, but others assume they’re dating.
The film follows a couple as they develop feelings for each other while also trying to escape a pursuing killer. It received generally positive reviews and earned $33.1 million at the box office, making it a modest success.
Eternity – $34.9 Million
Like the film A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, Eternity is boosted by its well-known actors. Elizabeth Olsen stars, supported by Miles Teller and Callum Turner, and the movie has a compelling story idea.
Joan Olsen recently passed away and found herself in the afterlife. There, she was reunited with both of her husbands: Larry, whom she’d been married to for 65 years and often bickered with, and Luke, her first husband who died young in the war. Now, Joan must choose which man she wants to spend forever with.
Good chemistry between the main actors and a well-written script made Eternity a modest success. The movie earned about $35 million despite costing only $12 million to make, and it seems likely to gain a larger audience now that it’s available for streaming.
The Roses – $51.9 Million
Searchlight Pictures
The Roses performed very well at the box office, earning $51.9 million. While this is a strong result, the film’s $30 million production budget was more than some other movies in the same comedy and romance category.
The Roses is a fresh take on the 1989 film, The War of the Roses. It focuses on a couple who appear to have an ideal marriage, but secretly harbor growing resentment towards each other. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, who has been nominated for an Oscar, and Olivia Colman, an Academy Award winner.
The joy of The Roses comes from its unpredictable and chaotic energy. You never quite know what the characters will do next to outsmart each other, which makes it a refreshingly different and highly entertaining romantic movie.
Song Sung Blue – $55.3 Million
The movie Song Sung Blue is actually based on a real-life couple! It’s inspired by a 2008 documentary that follows Mike and Claire Sardina, who perform together in a tribute band called Lightning and Thunder, dedicated to the music of Neil Diamond.
Even though the band featured in the film wasn’t famous, the movie was expected to do well in theaters thanks to its stars, Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson. They both gave strong performances, and Kate Hudson even received nominations for Golden Globe and Academy Awards.
I’ve been hearing good things about Song Sung Blue, and it looks like audiences agreed – it definitely drew people into theaters! Financially, it did okay, earning $55.3 million against a $30 million budget, so it wasn’t a blockbuster, but a solid win. Honestly, I get the feeling it’s the kind of movie that will really find its audience when it hits streaming services, though.
Hamnet – $70.5 Million
Be prepared for a deeply moving and heartbreaking story when you watch Hamnet. The film centers on Agnes Hathaway and William Shakespeare, and portrays their lives following the death of their eleven-year-old son.
Watching Hamnet is incredibly moving, and can be quite difficult, but it’s crucial to remember that a deep love story lies at its core. Throughout the film, it’s clear that Agnes and William truly love each other, even as they face immense hardship.
Hamnet is the highest-rated movie on this list and has received overwhelmingly positive reviews this year. It’s nominated for both Best Picture and Best Director at the Oscars, and Jessie Buckley is winning numerous awards. The film was a commercial success, earning $70.5 million despite a $35 million production budget, largely through positive word-of-mouth.
Regretting You – $90.4 Million
Colleen Hoover is one of the most popular authors writing today. Her books are incredibly well-read and frequently chosen for book club discussions worldwide.
Every time one of her novels is adapted for the screen, it’s a success. Her latest, Regretting You, tells the story of Morgan Grant and her daughter, Clara, and how the fallout from an accident uncovers a shocking betrayal and long-held family secrets.
The connection between Clara and Miller is a key part of this story, and is brought to life by the great chemistry between actors Mckenna Grace and Mason Thames. The film, Regretting You, earned $90.4 million, making it the number one movie in theaters this week, and marking Mason Thames’ third successful film this year.
Materialists – $107.9 Million
I’m already a huge fan of Celine Song! She’s quickly become one of the most exciting filmmakers working in romance, in my opinion. Her first movie, Past Lives, absolutely wrecked me – in the best way! It was a critical and audience darling, and honestly, after seeing it, I couldn’t wait to see what she’d create next.
In 2025, her second big film, Materialists, came out. It became the most successful romance of the year, largely thanks to its star-studded cast: Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans. These three actors are all huge names in Hollywood right now, and audiences were eager to see them together.
The movie Materialists follows a matchmaker named Johnson who finds herself caught between two men: a rich and carefree playboy (Pascal) and her former boyfriend, an actor trying to make it big (Evans). The film was a financial success, earning $107.9 million despite only costing $20 million to produce – a remarkably high profit margin for the year.
Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy – $140.4 Million
As a huge movie fan, I’ve definitely noticed that being part of a franchise can really help a film’s success at the box office. Take the Bridget Jones series, for example. It all started with Bridget Jones’s Diary way back in 2001, and the subsequent two films also did incredibly well, each earning over $200 million around the world.
But Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy faced a bigger challenge. It was released almost ten years after the previous film, and with the uncertainty of post-COVID movie attendance, it was difficult to predict its success in theaters.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy follows Bridget as she adjusts to life as a widow and a single mother. She unexpectedly finds herself with two potential love interests: her son’s science teacher and a younger man. The movie was a financial success, earning $140.4 million despite costing only $50 million to make.
