Toy Story Co-Creator Opens Up About Franchise Spinoffs After Lightyear’s Box Office Flop

As a huge Pixar fan, I’ve loved watching the Toy Story series grow over the years – it really is their most important franchise and has given us so many amazing movies! But even with such a strong foundation, they took a risk in 2022 with Lightyear. It was meant to be a fun backstory for Buzz Lightyear, explaining what inspired Andy’s love of the toy, but it didn’t quite connect with audiences. While critics were okay with it, it unfortunately lost money in theaters. You’d think that would make them hesitant about doing more spinoffs, but honestly? I wouldn’t be surprised if we see even more stories from the Toy Story universe down the line.

In an interview with Screen Rant while promoting Toy Story 5, Pixar director Andrew Stanton explained how they approach potential spinoff ideas. He said the team has learned to recognize whether a concept will resonate with audiences and be sustainable throughout the four-year production process. They constantly discuss new possibilities, often deciding against them or postponing development. However, if an idea shows real promise, they’ll explore it further – but only when they’re confident it’s fully developed and ready to move forward.

Will Pixar Ever Make Another Toy Story Spinoff?

Stanton and his team seem to be taking the right path with potential new Toy Story stories. Brainstorming is good, but Pixar won’t pursue anything unless they believe it’s a compelling story – which is how they approach most of their films. It’s great that Lightyear‘s disappointing performance hasn’t discouraged them from exploring other options; one unsuccessful spin-off doesn’t mean future ideas will fail too.

I think I finally understand what Pixar was trying to do with Lightyear, but it just didn’t quite work. Pete Docter, their creative chief, even said they had to really rethink things after it didn’t do well, because it didn’t really resonate with fans. Honestly, even with all the ads, a lot of people weren’t sure what the movie was even about or how it connected to Toy Story. But Toy Story 5 is a completely different story! It feels like they’ve gone back to what makes the series so great. Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and everyone are dealing with a new challenge – their kid is growing up and changing interests. Everyone’s loving it, and it’s already getting amazing reviews. It looks like it’s going to easily make over a billion dollars, and I’m so excited to see it succeed!

If Pixar decides to create another Toy Story spinoff, it would likely be more successful to focus on characters and stories directly connected to the main films rather than trying something completely new, like they did with Lightyear. While the idea of exploring Buzz Lightyear’s “real” backstory seemed good initially, audiences are much more invested in the toy versions of the characters. A project based on the “Woody’s Roundup” gang might face similar challenges as Lightyear. However, a spinoff starring one of the beloved toys could work better, though it’s tricky because viewers see Woody, Buzz, and the others as a team. It would be easier to feature Jessie in a story with her friends than to try and build a movie around Rex or Mr. Potato Head alone.

Pixar isn’t currently focusing on any new Toy Story spin-off movies. They already have several projects in development, including sequels to The Incredibles and Coco, as well as completely original films like Ono Ghost Market and an untitled musical. However, that doesn’t mean we won’t see another Toy Story film someday. Director Andrew Stanton has said he’d be willing to make a Toy Story 6, potentially showing more of Bonnie growing up before a new child is introduced. But Pixar wants to ensure they have a compelling story before moving forward, which is a good approach. Whether it’s Toy Story 6 or something different, fans can rest assured that the future of this beloved franchise is in capable hands.
