‘Train to Busan’ Director’s New Zombie Movie ‘Colony’ Scores Cannes Debut

Zombie movies are becoming popular again, which makes sense considering the subject matter! Filmmakers are finding fresh ways to make these films exciting, as seen with the critically acclaimed 28 Years Later series, though the second film didn’t perform well in theaters. The upcoming Resident Evil movie from Zach Cregger is also getting positive buzz from early screenings. Now, another established director is joining the trend with a new zombie project.

Filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho is back with a new zombie movie called Colony, set in a high-rise building in Korea during an outbreak. Sang-ho is famous for directing the 2016 hit Train to Busan, which is now considered a modern classic in the zombie genre. He released two other films this year, Revelations and The Ugly, though they received somewhat mixed reactions. Colony will debut at the Cannes Film Festival, a fitting location since Train to Busan also premiered there a decade ago.

When Train to Busan was released, it quickly gained widespread praise, even earning a shout-out from director Edgar Wright as his all-time favorite zombie film. The movie received a 95% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics highlighting its scary and realistic zombies, and its clever use of a speeding train to build suspense and deliver exciting action sequences. A sequel, Peninsula, directed by the same filmmaker, came out in 2020, but it didn’t achieve the same level of success or recognition as the original 2016 film.

Originally intended to debut at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival – before the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic – Sang-ho’s film Colony marked his successful return to the festival. The movie centers around a dangerous situation with a rapidly changing and unpredictable infection. Great zombie films often stand out by offering a unique take on the infected or undead. It’s currently unclear if this new film will connect to Train to Busan or Peninsula, but descriptions suggest it will tell its own standalone story.

The upcoming film Colony features a talented cast including Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Kim Shin-rok, Shin Hyun-been, and Go Soo. The choreographer from the hit zombie film Train to Busan, Jeon Young, also worked on Colony, suggesting it will deliver similarly intense and exciting action. With the Cannes Film Festival’s schedule expanding, fans are eager to see which other Korean films will be showcased at this renowned event.
