Train To Busan Is Getting The Zombie Movie Sequel We All Deserve

The director of Train to Busan is working on a new zombie film that many believe will be a stronger follow-up to the original than the actual sequel was. Zombie stories remain popular in horror because the concept is so versatile – it can be endlessly reinvented and still be incredibly effective.

As a huge fan of zombie films, I think Train to Busan really showcases just how creative the genre can be. It takes the classic zombie apocalypse and puts it on a speeding train, trapping a group of people with the undead. That simple but brilliant idea, combined with the incredibly tense atmosphere, is why it quickly became one of the most highly-regarded zombie movies ever made, and honestly, it still holds up as a fantastic film today.

Considering how well Train to Busan has held up over the years, people are starting to look for movies that could follow in its footsteps. While it did have a sequel, that film wasn’t as popular as the original. An upcoming movie slated for release in 2026 looks particularly promising in that regard, and could potentially carry on the legacy of Train to Busan.

Colony Is A Truly Exciting Successor To Train To Busan Made By The Same Director

Director Yeon Sang-ho is revisiting the zombie genre after his success with the 2016 film Train to Busan, its earlier prequel Seoul Station, and the 2020 sequel Peninsula.

The upcoming game, Colony, puts players in the shoes of a group of survivors battling a zombie outbreak. This time, the action takes place inside a building that was hosting a biotech conference when the outbreak began. Authorities have sealed off the building, trapping the survivors and forcing them to fight the infected on their own.

The upcoming series, Colony, looks promising because it centers around the fast-evolving zombies and features a biotechnology professor, Kwon Se-jeong, who must use her expertise to figure out how the infected are behaving in order to stay alive. Like the movie Train to Busan, Colony seems to offer a complex story with plenty of suspense and thrilling scenes.

Train To Busan’s Legacy Could Play A Big Role In Colony’s Success

Even ten years after it came out, Train to Busan remains a top zombie movie, and is often used as a standard to compare newer films in the genre. It’s highly rated, currently ranking second on Rotten Tomatoes’ list of the 100 Best Zombie Movies, with a 95% approval rating from critics and an 85% audience score.

Given his success with zombie films, it’s great to see Yeon Sang-ho directing another one. This new movie has the potential to be even more popular and critically acclaimed than his previous film, Peninsula. Peninsula, released in 2020, received mixed reviews and didn’t attract as much of an audience, possibly because it came out during the COVID-19 pandemic when fewer people were going to the movies and many were hesitant to watch a film centered around a deadly virus.

While Peninsula continued the story from Train to Busan, the upcoming film Colony might actually feel more like a true follow-up. Colony has the chance to establish its own original story, similar to how Train to Busan successfully did in 2016. That makes the new zombie movie, scheduled for release in the US on August 28, 2026, something to look forward to.
