Transformers/GI Joe’s Energon Universe is Getting an Animated Series

Adult animation is booming with hilarious and sophisticated shows that are pushing the boundaries of what animation can be. Series like Rick and Morty, Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, and Invincible have led the way, and now another beloved franchise is joining the adult animation scene. Skybound Entertainment is creating an animated series based on their reimagining of Transformers and G.I. Joe, known as the Energon Universe, and here are the details.

Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment is partnering with Hasbro Entertainment to create a new adult animated series called “Energon Universe,” according to Deadline. While it’s not yet known where the show will stream or air, a showrunner has been selected: Joe Henderson. He’s known for his work on popular TV shows like Lucifer, White Collar, Almost Human, Graceland, and 11.22.63. The series will feature prominent roles for iconic characters from both the Transformers and G.I. Joe universes, including the Autobots, Decepticons, G.I. Joe, and Cobra, just like in the original comics.

Why The Energon Universe Works So Well

The Energon Universe launched in 2023 with the comic series Void Rivals, which was initially presented as a standalone story and didn’t immediately connect to the worlds of Transformers and G.I. Joe. Since then, both Transformers and G.I. Joe have gotten their own comic series, allowing characters like Duke, Cobra Commander, and Scarlet to star in their own adventures. Though the G.I. Joe team and the Autobots have crossed paths, a major crossover event hasn’t happened yet, making fans curious about how this shared universe will be explored in animated form.

Earlier this year, we spoke with Robert Kirkman of Skybound Entertainment about the origins of the Energon Universe. He explained that securing the rights wasn’t a straightforward process. Hasbro was initially talking to multiple publishers, and Skybound only learned about the opportunity late in the game. They quickly put together a proposal and were fortunate enough to win the rights. Kirkman emphasized that the project is driven by creative passion and enjoyment, with less focus on strict business planning. He and the team are genuinely excited to be working within this universe.

Interestingly, there’s a chance we might hear the original voice actors from Transformers in this new series. Peter Cullen, who famously voiced Optimus Prime, already worked with Robert Kirkman on Invincible. While it hasn’t been officially announced, it would be logical for Kirkman to ask Cullen to return, along with other actors from the original Transformers animated shows.
