As a longtime movie and TV watcher, I’ve definitely noticed domestic abuse storylines are, unfortunately, pretty common. You see it all the time in soaps and dramas – remember that BBC drama ‘Trip Trap’ with Kevin Whatley? It was a really surprising role for him. Now there’s a show called ‘Trapped‘ tackling it again. The poster makes it look like a kidnapping thriller, but it’s actually about a relationship. Raye and Frank are total opposites – it’s that ‘opposites attract’ thing. Honestly, the comparison I first thought of was Meghan and Harry, but let me rephrase that! Raye is really quiet and small, while Frank is this huge, tattooed guy with a seriously short fuse – think a Vietnam vet with PTSD going through a messy divorce. Not a great combo, right? And to make things even worse, Frank’s dad is on his deathbed, causing even more tension with his brother. It’s a really stressful setup, to say the least.
It doesn’t take long for Raye to once again suffer Frank’s violent temper and uncontrollable anger, as he lashes out at her, his brother, and anyone nearby. Like many stories about domestic abuse, the film explores why Raye has stayed with Frank for so long, and uses flashbacks to reveal her past and offer insight into the difficult situation many people – women and men alike – find themselves in. Despite being made on a small budget, the script feels authentic, filled with harsh language, making for a challenging but realistic film.
