TWD: Dead City Season 3’s Major Changes Mark the End of an Era

The third season of the popular show will arrive on AMC and AMC+ in July, marking a fresh start for the horror series. Major changes are coming, and a key storyline that’s been running for a while will finally conclude.

As the show prepares to return, stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan) and Lauren Cohan (Maggie) spoke with Entertainment Weekly about what viewers can anticipate. They revealed that Negan and Maggie have truly become allies in Season 3 – they’re genuinely working together, not just in a temporary or uneasy truce. In fact, they’ve even become friends, finally ending the decade-long conflict that started when Negan tragically killed Glenn while Maggie watched.

Negan and Maggie’s Relationship Evolves

Morgan explains that the characters Maggie and Negan needed to move past their conflict. He felt strongly that this shift was necessary, especially after Negan repeatedly saved Maggie and her son, even though she still resented him. Morgan believes everyone involved was ready for a change, wanting to move beyond the constant threat of violence and revenge. It wasn’t about simply waiting for an opportunity to kill each other anymore.

According to Cohan, this is a major turning point for Maggie and Negan. They’re finally going to genuinely work together, something that’s been suggested and tried for in the past, but never truly realized until now.

According to Cohan, she, Scott Gimple, and Jeff were discussing their wishes for Season 3. They all agreed they wanted to see Maggie and Negan team up and resolve their conflict. Then, the new showrunner, Seth Hoffman, introduced a plotline that provided a larger goal for them to achieve as they worked towards making peace.

TWD: Dead City Season 3 Won’t Have a Big Bad

Jeffrey Dean Morgan also revealed that Negan and Maggie will be teaming up in Season 3, marking a significant shift for the show. Traditionally, the series has centered around a primary villain – a role Negan himself once filled. However, this season won’t have a single overarching villain, offering a fresh approach to storytelling that viewers haven’t seen before in this franchise.

According to Hoffman, this season doesn’t have one central villain like Negan or the Croat. Instead, the focus is on a group attempting a seemingly impossible task – taking a big risk to achieve an ambitious goal, and then working to make that goal a reality.

Negan and Maggie seem to be developing a friendly relationship, leading some viewers to speculate about a possible romance. However, Morgan suggests that a romantic connection isn’t likely for them right now.

Morgan really enjoyed the scenes with Lauren, noting they had a unique dynamic. He described moments of lightheartedness and humor that made their characters feel like genuine friends, with a definite connection between them.

After a pause, he adds, “And I don’t mean a romantic spark.”
