There’s nothing quite like a fantastic blend of worlds, but it becomes even more exciting when the series involved are two iconic science fiction anime movies! When people discuss the most impactful anime films in history, “Ghost in the Shell” and “Akira” are always at the top of the list. In an upcoming exhibition in Osaka, these timeless sci-fi masterpieces have officially combined in a breathtaking work of art, skillfully created by Katsuhiro Otomo, the genius behind “Akira”.
Without a doubt, one of the most memorable scenes from the movie “Akira” is the poster featuring Kaneda striding towards his motorbike. This image has been reproduced numerous times, and artist Katsuhiro Otomo is reintroducing it for the latest gallery exhibition. The exhibition titled “The World of Masamune Shirow: Ghost in the Shell and the Path of Creation” recently opened in Osaka, marking its debut. To honor this occasion, Otomo’s artwork has been displayed, which showcases Motoko Kusanagi replicating the “Akira” poster by approaching a Tachikoma – one of the tanks from the “Ghost in the Shell” manga and anime series. The Tachikoma in the artwork resembles Kaneda’s motorbike, boasting a vibrant red color scheme and various stickers.
Initially revealed back in April 20XX in Tokyo and lasting until August, the “The World of Masamune Shirow: Ghost in the Shell and the Path of Creation” exhibition is still running in Osaka until October 5th. Those interested in this show should note that it will only be accessible in Osaka during this timeframe. The display features numerous collaborations with esteemed artists and mangakas, though the Katsujiro Otomo x “Ghost in the Shell” illustration is unique to Osaka. Be sure to take a look at the exhibit below…
A New Ghost in the Shell Anime Is Coming

1995’s seminal anime movie, “Ghost in the Shell,” has left an indelible mark on the world of animation. However, not even this iconic masterpiece is immune to modern remakes. Disregarding the live-action adaptation starring Scarlett Johansson that hit theaters in 2017, a fresh TV anime version of “Ghost in the Shell” is now in the works. The innovative studio Science SARU (“Dandadan”) will take charge of this new series, though an official release date has yet to be announced.
As a devoted admirer of the original series, I’m excited about the upcoming adaptation! Even though some fellow fans might have mixed feelings, the creator of the original manga, Masamune Shirow, warmly welcomes it. He views this new version as a fresh start for a second generation of enthusiasts. Given that the original work is quite vintage, he humbly asks for our understanding. Nevertheless, he sincerely hopes that this reboot will continue to offer an engaging visual experience that we can all enjoy!
