Two Years After Under Paris, Netflix Just Dropped a New Shark Movie (& It’s the Perfect Crawl Replacement)

The popularity of shark movies began with Steven Spielberg’s Jaws in 1975 and continues to be strong today. Over the past 50 years, many films featuring animal attacks have been made. Recently, Netflix released Under Paris (2024), a hit movie about a scientist trying to stop a giant, mutated shark in the Seine River during a triathlon, and a sequel is already planned. But before Under Paris 2 arrives, Netflix is releasing another shark horror film that fans who enjoyed Crawl are sure to love.

Alexandre Aja’s Crawl is a standout animal thriller, featuring a desperate fight for survival against alligators in a flooded space during a massive hurricane. Netflix’s new film, Thrash, which premiered on April 10th, follows a similar premise. Directed by Tommy Wirkola and starring Phoebe Dynevor, Thrash is set in a coastal town overwhelmed by a Category 5 hurricane and a dangerous group of sharks. The story focuses on a pregnant woman and a teenager with extreme anxiety as they struggle to survive being stranded.

Netflix’s Thrash Is a Perfect Shark-Filled Crawl Replacement

I really enjoyed Thrash! It’s a great addition to the recent wave of shark movies on Netflix, following Under Paris, and it definitely reminded me of Crawl – which is a really good thing, since Crawl was awesome. It hasn’t gotten official ratings yet, so it has a ways to go to match Crawl’s success, but early reviews are promising. Critics seem to be liking it! IndieWire called it a surprisingly fun and scary disaster movie, and Punch Drunk Critics said it’s perfect if you’re craving a quick, satisfying shark thriller.

Don’t go into Thrash expecting a cinematic masterpiece. It’s pure, over-the-top fun – the kind of shark thriller you can really sink your teeth into! Think of it as a more polished, but equally wild, version of a Syfy channel movie like Sharknado. It’s packed with thrilling action, plenty of gore, and, like Crawl, does a good job of creating suspense. The actors also give believable performances as people desperately trying to survive a terrifying situation.

What’s New on Netflix?

Netflix added the intense survival film Thrash to its lineup this April, along with other new releases like the survival thriller Beast. Viewers can also now stream American Gangster, Everest, Mission: Impossible, IF, and the 2022 Scream movie. More titles are coming soon, including Halloween Ends on April 13th and Apex on April 24th.
