2023 was a huge year for fans of Jujutsu Kaisen. The manga featured an incredible battle between its strongest characters, and the anime’s second season significantly boosted the series’ popularity. That season was split into two parts: the first five episodes covered the Hidden Inventory/Premature Death Arc, and the remaining episodes adapted the Shibuya Incident Arc. The story took a much darker turn when Kenjaku began his plan and trapped Satoru Gojo in the Prison Realm, unleashing chaos in a bustling Tokyo district. This was only the beginning, and things quickly escalated after Gojo was sealed, forcing the remaining sorcerers to step up and fight.
The disaster curses were simply too powerful, resulting in a huge number of injuries and deaths. Meanwhile, Jogo relentlessly forced Yuji to consume ten of Sukuna’s fingers, briefly giving the King of Curses control of his body. Even that short time was enough for Sukuna to cause widespread devastation. Season 2, Episode 17 showcased the long-awaited battle between Sukuna and Mahoraga, and the animation lived up to the hype. Released on November 16th, 2023, this fight remains unmatched by any other recent action sequence in Shonen anime, even two years later.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Sukuna vs. Mahoraga Changed the Story Forever
Sukuna, now in control of Yuji’s body, hadn’t had this much freedom in a long time and immediately started causing trouble. But he quickly realizes Megumi Fushiguro is in danger, and it seems Sukuna has big plans for him – plans that require Megumi to stay alive. To protect Megumi, someone needs to defeat Mahoraga, the incredibly powerful and untamable spirit from the Ten Shadows Technique.
Despite the challenges, the incredibly powerful Sukuna, now with fifteen fingers, quickly overpowered Mahoraga. He even pushed Mahoraga to its absolute limits, forcing it to evolve before defeating it. The animation for this fight was particularly impressive, featuring work from highly acclaimed animators like Vincent Chansard, Hakuyu Go, and Kazuto Arai. This aired while MAPPA was already facing criticism for issues with its production schedule and quality.
Even with the challenges, the animators created an amazing episode featuring some of the most impressive fight scenes ever. The beautiful visuals and smooth animation are captivating and leave you wanting to see more. The battle concluded with Sukuna’s devastating attack on Mahoraga, which caused massive destruction in Shibuya and resulted in thousands of deaths. This wasn’t just an action-packed spectacle; it’s a key event that moves the story toward its conclusion.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Animation Staff Created This Phenomenal Episode Despite the Production Meltdown
It’s common knowledge within the Japanese anime industry that studios are often understaffed, and animators are frequently overworked and underpaid. This problem has become more noticeable as anime gains popularity worldwide. MAPPA, a major animation studio in Japan, often finds itself at the center of these discussions. Recently, fans expressed strong disapproval after animators shared concerns online, leading viewers to call for better working conditions for the artists who create the anime adaptations they enjoy.
While production problems weren’t a major concern during the earlier Hidden Inventory/Premature Death storyline, things became much more difficult during the Shibuya Incident arc. Episodes were frequently finished very close to their release dates, and preview images that were meant to come out a day beforehand were often delayed by several hours.
Despite a difficult production process, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 was a standout anime in 2025, earning numerous awards at the Crunchyroll Awards 2024. Episode 17, in particular, boasts incredible fight scenes considering the challenges faced during its creation. Fans are eagerly anticipating Season 3, and while production might be tough, MAPPA’s dedicated and talented animators are expected to deliver a fantastic season.
