Season 2 of *Jujutsu Kaisen* delivered some of the series’ most intense and heartbreaking scenes, particularly during the Shibuya Incident arc, which marked a turning point for Yuji and his friends. Kenjaku’s long-awaited Halloween plan wasn’t about celebration, but about revealing the terrifying potential of cursed energy. Things spiraled out of control when Satoru Gojo was unexpectedly imprisoned, forcing other sorcerers to confront incredibly powerful enemies. While Gojo could easily handle these disaster-level curses, they posed a serious threat to everyone else, even skilled sorcerers like Nanami Kento.
Nanami quickly became a popular character when he was introduced in the first season’s battle against Mahito, acting as a guide and teacher to Yuji. Over about a month, they worked together on missions and fought curses, with Yuji learning a lot from the seasoned sorcerer while Satoru was away on assignment. However, the second season shocked viewers with Nanami’s sudden and violent death at the hands of Mahito, happening right before Yuji’s eyes. After his death, the anime included a subtle and touching detail about Nanami that viewers didn’t realize until the episode director brought it to their attention.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 20 Director Finally Explains a Hidden Detail Regarding Nanami

Yuji Tokuno, the director of the episode, recently shared on X (formerly Twitter) that he was happy all three takes of a particular scene with Nanamin made it into the final cut. He explained that the intentional omission of clock hands went largely unnoticed due to the powerful dialogue, and jokingly added that it meant Nanamin wouldn’t have to work extra hours anymore. This comment came almost two years after the episode originally aired.
Yuji was devastated by the destruction Sukuna caused in Shibuya, and Nanami’s death was the final blow. While incredibly sad, Nanami’s passing in episode 18 was portrayed with sensitivity by the animators, especially the touching scene of them dancing on the beach, which deeply moved many viewers. Despite this loss, Yuji remembered Nanami’s last words – a message of trust and encouragement to carry on – even as he felt like giving up.
Yuji was losing hope, but a confrontation with Aoi Todo helped him rediscover his will to fight, and he felt bad for letting Nanami down. Yuji remembered Nanami’s last moments differently than they actually happened, picturing his mentor looking calm and wearing his trademark suit. Interestingly, a small detail in Season 2, Episode 20 – that Nanami’s watch had no hands – went unnoticed by many viewers.
Now that he was gone, he no longer had to worry about overwork, something he disliked intensely given his feelings about the Jujutsu world and curses. This is why the director highlighted his watch in a specific shot – a detail that, despite being powerful, went largely unnoticed. When he mentioned this detail in a tweet, it quickly became popular, with fans praising the animators for including such subtle touches that contributed to the second season’s success.
