Ubisoft Spins Off Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six Franchises

The last few years haven’t been easy for Ubisoft, but today marks the start of a fresh chapter for some of its most popular games. Ubisoft has become a major player in the gaming world with franchises and titles like Assassin’s Creed, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Star Wars Outlaws, The Division, and Rainbow Six. Now, three of these franchises are being reimagined with completely new approaches.

Today, Ubisoft announced that its popular franchises – Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry – are now part of a new business group called Vantage Studios. IGN reports that this group also includes a 25% investment from Tencent. The name ‘Vantage Studios’ wasn’t decided by executives; instead, it was chosen by a vote of the team’s 2,300 employees.

Ubisoft is branding Vantage Studios as its first “Creative House.” Employees at the studio have stated that this new group will have full creative and business authority over three of its game series. Aside from Far Cry, the other franchises are regularly releasing new content, meaning we’ll probably see the impact of this change relatively soon – even if it’s initially at a business or organizational level.

The Purpose

When Ubisoft first announced the partnership earlier this year, they emphasized the $1.25 billion investment from Tencent. They explained that this increased funding would allow them to improve their creative abilities and deliver higher-quality, story-driven games. Specifically, they planned to expand their multiplayer options with more frequent updates, introduce free-to-play games, and add more ways for players to connect socially.

The newly formed subsidiary brings together the teams behind popular franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry, with members located in Montreal, Quebec, Sofia, Barcelona, Sherbrooke, and Saguenay. This group will also manage Ubisoft’s existing library of games, as well as any new titles currently in development. This change allows the main Ubisoft company to concentrate on developing other franchises, such as Ghost Recon and The Division.

Currently, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is the biggest release for the series, although Assassin’s Creed: Mirage is still receiving updates after launch. Rainbow Six continues to be updated, but we don’t have much information about the future of Far Cry. If Far Cry will be featured as part of this new organization, it’s likely there are important plans for the game. There’s also talk of a Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake, but details about its release date or development progress are scarce.
