Among the Avengers’ formidable MCU adversaries, it’s said that one who previously clashed with the team in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” is set to have a significant future following his upcoming return. So far, the Avengers have encountered three major antagonists in Loki, Ultron, and Thanos within the MCU; Doctor Doom is slated to become the fourth member of this elite group in 2026. Interestingly, out of these four, only Ultron has made a single appearance in the MCU (excluding the Infinity Ultron Variant from “What If…?”). Fortunately, that will soon change as James Spader, who played the villain in the original film, is set to reprise his role in Disney+’s upcoming series, “Vision Quest.
Based on reports from Daniel Richtman (via Cosmic Marvel), it seems that Marvel Studios intends to bring back the character, Ultron, across several upcoming MCU projects following his role in “Vision Quest.” While the 2026 Disney+ series will be Ultron’s initial appearance in the main MCU timeline since 2015’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” it appears that Marvel Studios has significant plans for him, which they plan to establish in the upcoming “Vision Quest” next year.
In the upcoming series “Vision Quest,” it has been confirmed that James Spader, who played a role in “Avengers 2,” will once again embody the character Ultron, following Ross Marquand’s portrayal of the villain’s voice in the animated series “What If…?
In the show “Vision Quest”, Spader’s Ultron is joined by other artificial intelligence characters, including Jocasta played by T’Nia Miller, EDITH portrayed by Emily Hampshire, and FRIDAY acted by Kerry Condon. The upcoming Disney+ series will also introduce Raza, played by Faran Tahir, Paladin played by Todd Stashwick, and allegedly Tommy Maximoff, who is said to be played by Ruaridh Mollica.
It is anticipated that “Vision Quest” will be among the six upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) shows airing on Disney+ in 2026, with Marvel Studios moving steadily towards the release of “Avengers: Doomsday” in December.
How Ultron Could Fit Into the MCU’s Masterplan
The series is said to significantly modify Ultron’s design, as he and other AIs from “Vision Quest” will reportedly adopt human forms modeled after their respective actors. This change seems to be aimed at reducing production time and visual effects costs for Disney+. However, it’s possible that his original robotic appearance could reappear in a future, larger project.
Earlier speculations hinted that the Ultron interface had been lying inactive within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), with fragments expected to resurface in “Vision Quest”. This could pave the way for a complete return of Ultron, providing a recurring menace that the MCU has lacked for quite some time.
Marvel Studios has declared its intention to create Disney+ series that have potential for multiple seasons, based on their performance. Since the production of “Vision Quest” is currently underway, there’s a possibility that a second season might be planned, with Ultron potentially reprising his major villain role.
As a movie critic, I’d say: After the chilling portrayal of Ultron in “Avengers” and “Age of Ultron”, it’s fascinating to ponder about his potential appearances in future Marvel cinematic ventures such as “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Secret Wars”. The multiverse-spanning threat that was Ultron has already been explored in the animated series “What If…?”, where we saw him wielding the Infinity Stones. So, it would be thrilling to see this intriguing variant of Ultron resurrected in live-action once more.
During an active phase of development for Marvel Studios’ Armor Wars blockbuster, which delves into Tony Stark’s legacy and technology, whispers arose about the potential inclusion of Ultron. Given that Ultron represents one of Stark’s greatest blunders, his narrative could continue on the big screen if Armor Wars progresses post-Secret Wars.
