Quentin Tarantino is a celebrated filmmaker with a distinct style. He’s become well-known for a quirky detail in his films: frequently showing actors’ feet, as seen in movies like Kill Bill and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Speaking of the latter, it’s considered one of Maya Hawke’s best roles – she played a member of the Manson Family. Interestingly, her mother, Uma Thurman, shared just four words of advice with her about working with the Oscar-winning director.
Quentin Tarantino, the director of Django Unchained, has a well-known fascination with feet, even famously focusing on Margot Robbie’s feet in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Although Tarantino has spoken out against the discussions surrounding this, it seems those who work with him feel differently. Actress Maya Hawke recently shared advice her mother, Uma Thurman (who often collaborates with Tarantino), gave her before filming one of his movies:
Keep your shoes on.
You know, it’s funny, I heard a great story about Ethan Hawke and Quentin Tarantino. Apparently, Hawke’s mom gave him some really specific advice before he started filming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She told him to always keep his shoes on! It turns out Tarantino loves having actors barefoot on set – Uma Thurman’s feet were all over the screen in Kill Bill Vol. 1, and a lot of the cast ended up ditching their shoes during filming, but Hawke was prepared thanks to his mom!
The popular 2019 film unexpectedly sparked online interest in Margot Robbie’s feet, but Maya Hawke kept hers hidden. Following her mother’s advice, Hawke didn’t show her feet in the movie, unlike some of her co-stars. Margaret Qualley’s feet were visible throughout the film, and Dakota Fanning and Sydney Sweeney’s were prominently featured in the scene at the Spawn Ranch.
Amy Poehler and Maya Hawke worked together on Inside Out 2 (available on Disney+), and that connection probably explains why Hawke was so open about the advice her famous mother gave her regarding Quentin Tarantino. Before becoming well-known for Stranger Things, Hawke appeared in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, where she was one of several young actors portraying members of the Manson Family.
In addition to the Kill Bill films, Uma Thurman previously starred in Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 hit, Pulp Fiction. Because she’s worked with him extensively, she was able to offer her daughter helpful guidance on working with the director.
Many movie fans would love to see Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino work together on another Kill Bill film. While there’s no news about a third movie being made, that hasn’t stopped people from hoping it happens.
The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is set to debut on November 26th, 2025. Many fans, including myself, are hoping to see Maya Hawke’s character, Robin, make it through the ultimate showdown with Vecna and the Upside Down.
