Underseen Post-Apocalyptic Series All Sci-Fi Fans Must See

There haven’t been any recent announcements about a release date or even production starting on I Am Legend 2, so it doesn’t look like it will be coming out soon. In the meantime, fans might enjoy a lesser-known, but captivating, six-episode post-apocalyptic miniseries.

I’ve seen so many post-apocalyptic stories, and honestly, most of them just don’t stick with you. The original I Am Legend movie was a bit of a mixed bag. Critics weren’t thrilled because it really changed a lot from the book and made the story pretty simple. But even though it wasn’t a critical success, people really loved it and went to see it, which is why they’re now making another one!

Even though production on I Am Legend 2 is just beginning, fans looking for something similar to watch don’t have to wait long. A great option actually premiered less than a year ago.

Earth Abides & I Am Legend Have Similar Opening Sequences

Both Earth Abides and I Am Legend feature male characters who think they are the last people alive after a disaster. They wander through eerily quiet worlds, hearing only their own footsteps. As the stories unfold, both characters begin to notice that with humans gone, animals are starting to take over places where people used to live.

Both Ish and Neville rely on their scientific expertise to try and fix the devastation caused by the widespread pandemic and rebuild society. However, they quickly realize finding solutions is much harder than they thought, and they begin to doubt whether science alone can help when the natural world has changed so drastically.

Earth Abides’ Post-Apocalyptic Drama Is Grounded & Realistic

The idea of a single person surviving a disaster has become a common theme in post-apocalyptic stories. However, George R. Stewart’s novel Earth Abides, published in 1949, was one of the first to use this idea and help make it popular. What also sets Earth Abides apart is its focus on realism and believable situations, rather than exaggerated drama.

You know, I’ve been watching the new show, and what really struck me is how grounded it is. Unlike a lot of post-apocalyptic stuff, it doesn’t rely on zombies or monsters. It feels…real. It focuses on the actual difficulties people would have trying to rebuild their lives. And the main character? He’s not some perfect hero. He’s flawed, he’s struggling, and he’s trying to figure things out just like everyone else – letting go of the way things used to be. It’s a refreshing take, honestly.

Earth Abides Adapts A Book That Inspired A Stephen King Classic

It’s notable that George R. Stewart’s Earth Abides was a major influence on Stephen King’s The Stand. In his book Danse Macabre, King explained that researching “an accidental chemical weapons spill in Utah” reminded him of Earth Abides.

Stephen King credits reading Earth Abides as the initial inspiration for his novel, The Stand. While Earth Abides isn’t as widely known as post-apocalyptic stories like I Am Legend, it’s a powerful and realistic work that deeply impacted the genre, making it a great choice for fans of science fiction and thrillers.
