Now that Jurassic World Rebirth has been released, Universal Pictures needs to start planning the future of the Jurassic World franchise, including a potential Jurassic World 5. While critics weren’t overly impressed with Rebirth (giving it a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – a common result for these films, with only the original Jurassic Park and Jurassic World receiving positive reviews), audiences enjoyed it. It earned a 70% audience score, a “B” grade from CinemaScore, and a significant $869 million worldwide.
Following the conclusion of the Jurassic World trilogy with Jurassic World Dominion three years ago, this new film was meant to launch a completely new direction for the Jurassic Park series. Despite its success in theaters, however, there haven’t been any announcements about a sequel. Late last year, rumors surfaced about a potential Jurassic World 5 starring Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey, but Universal Pictures hasn’t confirmed anything. This is surprising considering the franchise is highly profitable and popular.
Will Jurassic World 5 Happen?
While Jurassic World Rebirth didn’t reach the $1 billion mark at the box office – a first for the revived franchise since 2015 – that doesn’t necessarily mean it was a disappointment. Moviegoing trends have shifted, and earning between $800-850 million now is comparable to reaching $1 billion in the past. Plus, Rebirth was made for a much lower budget – around $180 million – than other Jurassic World films, making it even more profitable.
It’s no surprise Universal wants to make another Jurassic World movie – financial success is often the main driver behind these franchises. While Jurassic World was initially planned as a trilogy – with a third film confirmed before the second even came out – it’s surprising we haven’t heard about a follow-up featuring the cast of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Recent rumors suggested the next film might be called Jurassic World: Liberation, and that Universal had registered the domain name, but those reports turned out to be inaccurate.
Universal is likely working on a fifth Jurassic World film, though development is probably still in its early stages. The franchise is a major success for them, especially now that The Fast Saga is concluding, and it’s smart of them to take their time with it.
These movies will probably always draw a crowd for some summer entertainment, but the storyline needs to be compelling. The last film, Rebirth, relied on the tired trope of a hidden island, and the series can’t repeat that. Plus, the idea of dinosaurs existing in the real world has already been largely abandoned, so the filmmakers need a strong reason to continue beyond just another island or park. The blood samples collected by the main characters in Rebirth could be a good starting point for a fresh direction.
Interestingly, Jurassic World Rebirth moved from announcement to release relatively fast. It was first reported in early 2024, filmed by June, and hit theaters in July 2025. Considering Universal usually releases new installments every three years, a summer 2028 release still seems likely, and is probably the current target. It’s also reasonable to expect the original cast, and possibly director Gareth Edwards (who doesn’t have other projects lined up), to return for the next film.
I thought Jurassic World: Dominion was a solid sequel. Like other recent Jurassic films, the story wasn’t perfect and relied too much on created dinosaurs. However, it introduced a fun new group of characters and delivered some truly impressive dinosaur action – the T.rex on the boat and the Titanosaurus scenes were highlights, ranking among the best moments in the last eleven years of these films. If the next movie can improve the story and characters, I’m already looking forward to Jurassic World 5.
