In simple terms, the Netflix spy action thriller “The Night Agent” returns for its second season, reconnecting us with Peter Sutherland and Rose Larkin, approximately two years since their initial introduction to us.
In the latest season, Peter is fully immersed in his role as a Night Action operative. However, let’s rewind and explore how he reached this position and where our initial encounter with him took place during the show’s debut.
With a significant break between seasons, some viewers might find themselves a bit hazy on the details. That’s why we’re here to help! Check out our concise yet comprehensive Season 1 recap.
Read on for everything you need to know about The Night Agent season 1, heading into season 2.
What happened throughout the season?
Our initial encounter with Peter Sutherland took place when he held a lower rank at the FBI, but he made a significant impact by rescuing commuters during a bomb explosion in the Washington D.C. subway system.
He ended up working for Diane Farr, the White House chief of staff, handling a phone in the basement that seldom receives calls.
Yet, on a particular day, it came to pass as tech entrepreneur Rose Larkin reached out in distress, using the secret phrase “Night Action.” This was the very same term her late aunt and uncle had shared with her prior to their untimely deaths by assassination.
As a cinephile delving into a thrilling tale, I stumbled upon an intriguing twist: Rose’s aunt and uncle were covert members of a clandestine American intelligence unit, Night Action. Consequently, I found myself compelled to protect Rose while unraveling the mystery surrounding her kin and their involvement in this secret program.
Throughout the season, it became clear that the Metro bombing was carried out by an ex-soldier named Colin, and Rose’s family were brutally killed by hitmen known as Dale and Ellen.
Yet, these individuals were employed by Vice President Redfield and CEO Gordon Wick, who were also military contractors. They devised the Metro bombing as a means to assassinate a foreign political figure named Omar Zadar. Fortunately, Peter managed to prevent this from happening.
Rose’s family was investigating the Metro explosion, but when they came dangerously close to uncovering the truth, Redfield and Wick arranged for their assassination instead.
Later on, Redfield and Wick attempted to remove Zadar once more, accompanied by President Travers. During their gathering at Camp David, the president intended to demonstrate backing for Zadar publicly.
However, Peter and Rose managed to stop them and bring Redfield and Wick to justice.
This was facilitated when it was found out that Diane Farr was implicated as well, having been recruited by Redfield following the event. Her role was to conceal and maintain silence about the conspiracy.
Farr and Redfield were both arrested, while Wick went on the run.
Where did we leave Peter and Rose?
Towards the close of the season, following their successful effort in rescuing President Travers from danger, both Peter and Rose received private expressions of gratitude from her. Notably, Peter was presented with a recording that unveiled the truth concerning his father – previously branded as a traitor by the public. However, Peter had always harbored doubts about his father’s guilt, believing him to be innocent.
It turned out that his father was indeed guilty of treason, receiving payments from a foreign spy in exchange for secret information. In an attempt to make amends for his actions, he took on a dual role as a spy for the Night Action group, but tragically, he lost his life while operating undercover.
At the end of season 1, Peter was spotted saying farewell to Rose with a kiss, then getting on an official plane. This scene unveiled that he had become an official Night Action agent and received his initial task.
