Upcoming Obsidian RPG Avowed seemingly runs at 30 FPS on Xbox Series X|S — and a big Capcom game might be as well

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say I find it intriguing that more and more games are opting for 30 FPS performance on current-gen consoles. I remember the days when 60 FPS was the gold standard, and anything less felt like a step backwards. However, with advances in technology and graphics, it seems that some developers are choosing visual fidelity over fluid gameplay.


A couple of big upcoming games may be running at 30 FPS on current gaming consoles. 

In a conversation with the Iron Lords Podcast, Xbox Game Studios developer Obsidian Entertainment discussed various aspects of their upcoming role-playing game, Avowed, including combat mechanics and developmental insights. During the interview, when asked about console performance, Obsidian’s art director Matt Hansen assured Xbox users that they could expect a minimum frame rate of 30 frames per second (FPS).

Hansen mentioned that since the game is a single-player experience from one person’s perspective, maintaining 60 frames per second isn’t always crucial. This flexibility allows them to incorporate more intense visual aspects such as lighting effects. Moreover, he explained that the team is still working on optimizing performance in certain areas.

During Gamescom 2024, participants who were present had the opportunity to play the latest version of Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds on a PlayStation 5. Many attendees, such as MH_Canta on Twitter, reported that the demo was running at 30 frames per second (FPS). Generally, games created for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X share similar gameplay modes, with the main differences being in 120 FPS support, which is where exceptions primarily occur.

More and more games are targeting 30 FPS

Over the past year, we’ve seen an increasing number of newly released games exclusive to current-generation systems being initially limited in their frame rate options. For instance, among Xbox first-party titles, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, Starfield, and Redfall were launched at a fixed 30 FPS. However, Bethesda Game Studios made adjustments to Starfield, offering 60 FPS, 40 FPS, and unlocked modes for those using VRR-capable displays. The same update was applied to Redfall, allowing it to run at 60 FPS as well.

In many third-party games, it’s become common for titles such as A Plague Tale: Requiem and Gotham Knights to debut with a 30 frames per second (FPS) mode, although A Plague Tale: Requiem was updated to accommodate 60 FPS several months post-launch. More contemporary examples include Dragon’s Dogma 2 from Capcom, which on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 theoretically supports an unlimited framerate, but generally runs at approximately 30 FPS upon initial release.

2025 is the projected release year for both Avowed and Monster Hunter Wilds, giving them ample time for refinement. This could potentially mean that they will feature a performance mode upon their launch, or at least an uncapped frame rate option for console gamers, allowing them to exceed the standard 30 frames per second.
