Sylvester Stallone is a legendary actor, best known for his roles in the classic films Rocky and Rambo. These characters have remained popular with audiences for decades. In the 1990s, he also starred in several successful action movies, including the 1993 thriller Cliffhanger. Directed by Renny Harlin, Cliffhanger was a huge hit around the world, praised for its impressive stunts and simple, exciting story – proving Stallone’s ability to draw audiences even outside of his most famous characters. Now, after a long wait, a remake of this action favorite is officially in the works.
The long-awaited remake of Cliffhanger is now scheduled to hit theaters on August 28, 2026. Jaume Collet-Serra, the director of the thriller The Shallows, will helm the film, based on a screenplay by Mark Bianculli. Neal H. Moritz will produce. This new version of the story focuses on a father and daughter who rely on their mountain climbing expertise to escape kidnappers in the dangerous Dolomite mountains.
Why Is a Cliffhanger Reboot Exciting?
The movie Cliffhanger became popular thanks to its gripping story. Sylvester Stallone starred as Gabe Walker, a mountain rescue ranger struggling with guilt after a climbing accident where he couldn’t save a friend’s girlfriend. A year later, a daring attempt to steal $100 million from a government plane goes wrong, and the robbers’ plane crashes in the mountains.
The movie centers around Walker and his former partner, Hal Tucker, who are tricked into a dangerous situation by the cold-hearted Eric Qualen (John Lithgow). They’re forced to rely on their climbing expertise to find hidden money while battling for survival. Made with a $70 million budget, the film earned a remarkable $255 million at the box office, largely thanks to its impressive and realistic stunts, including a famous scene of a transfer between two jets while flying at 15,000 feet – a moment still celebrated in action movies today.
The new Cliffhanger film has a strong creative team ready to build on what made the original successful, and director Jaume Collet-Serra is a perfect fit. He proved his skill at creating intense suspense with his 2016 film The Shallows, where a surfer was stranded near shore and hunted by a shark. The danger wasn’t just the shark, but also the rising tide, which created a thrilling race against time. This ability to make the environment itself a threat is key for Cliffhanger, where the treacherous mountain – with its cold and avalanches – is as dangerous as the criminals. Plus, the new story, about a father and daughter, echoes the original’s strength of combining exciting action with a heartfelt personal connection.
Cliffhanger is scheduled to be released in theaters on August 28, 2026.
