The documentary I’m Chevy Chase And You’re Not features interviews with many people who have known Chevy Chase throughout his life and career. This includes Beverly D’Angelo, his Vacation movie co-star. Despite their long working relationship and clear chemistry on screen, D’Angelo admits she still doesn’t understand why Chase often makes controversial statements.
D’Angelo is on the list of actors who have spent the most time working with Chevy Chase. They’ve appeared in five movies together: National Lampoon’s Vacation, National Lampoon’s European Vacation, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Vegas Vacation, and the final simply titled Vacation. The two famous names also collaborated elsewhere as attention on the franchise waned over time (See: TopMob’s 2015Vacation review), but she says his frequently bold and sometimes uncomfortable responses still surprise her to this day. She told ET:
You know, people always ask me about working with Chevy Chase. And honestly, after five movies, a TV pilot, a bunch of commercials, and countless appearances together, I still can’t figure him out! He’s a total enigma. But despite all that, or maybe because of it, I genuinely adore the guy.
The show Chev and Bev, created in 2015, never aired on ABC, but it would have featured the two leads as a retired couple raising their grandkids. Despite not being picked up, it demonstrates the actress’s continued desire to collaborate with her Vacation co-star, even years after first working together.
While Beverly D’Angelo remains a devoted supporter, not everyone shares her positive feelings towards Chevy Chase. Following the controversy surrounding his behavior on the set of Community, many involved with the show were unwilling to discuss him publicly after he left in 2012. Director Marina Zenovich even admitted she would have struggled to gather information about the show if not for the help of director Jay Chandrasekhar.
Despite the controversies, many in Hollywood still fondly remember Chevy Chase. D’Angelo says she never would have predicted maintaining a connection with him over so many years.
Absolutely. We’ve known each other for forty years. It’s amazing when I think about what initially made us laugh – it’s incredible that it led to a lifelong friendship.
D’Angelo herself has had a storied history with Hollywood relationships, leaving her first, Italian heir husband for Al Pacino. (And her ex was seemingly enthusiastic about the match!) They later split in 2003. She also was famously good friends with Carrie Fisher before the Star Wars actress tragically passed in 2016, and has recounted stories of Carrie being there for her when her young kid was sick years ago. She’s seemingly had very loyal friendships and marks Chevy Chase among them, despite his sometimes ornery and brash personality.
Perhaps one day that will lead them to movie number 6.
