Nina Dobrev’s romantic connections with Damon Salvatore predated the moment when her character, Elena Gilbert, developed feelings for the vampire.

As a dedicated fan, I’d like to share a bit of behind-the-scenes trivia from my favorite series, The Vampire Diaries. During my audition for the show on the CW, I happened to be in a relationship with an actor who was also trying out for the role that eventually went to Ian Somerhalder – the charismatic Damon Salvatore.

In the book “I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of The Vampire Diaries” by Samantha Highfill, Nina, aged 36, revealed that there was quite a bit of tension during her audition due to her relationship with Rob Mayes at the time. Nina clarified that things became uncomfortable when she was chosen for a role, while he wasn’t, leading to their breakup. Interestingly enough, it turned out that I eventually dated the character Damon, in reality.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’d rephrase that as follows: From 2010 to 2013, I found myself in a relationship with the charming actor from Degrassi, who was then 46 years old. After we parted ways, we continued to share the screen until my departure from the show in 2015. However, even post-breakup, we maintained a harmonious front for several years thereafter.

Shortly after their split in 2014, Ian and Nina jokingly exchanged a kiss on stage during the People’s Choice Awards as they received the award for Best On-Screen Chemistry.

The actress, who is fiancée to Shaun White, shared with TopMob News that their moment was straightforward, stating, “It was simply sincere. One might say ‘a spade is a spade’ to describe it.

Years on, Nina had no qualms discussing the details of her relationship with Ian, as well as his partner Nikki Reed.

The “Reunion” star expressed, during her appearance on “Watch What Happens Live” in 2019, that she found nothing strange at all about her friendship with the couple.
