The anime film Vampire Hunter D is considered a classic and one of the most important anime movies ever made. After the first film came out in the 1980s, the only sequel was Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust in 2000. Fans have been waiting 26 years for another installment, but D is finally returning this year. Get ready to revisit the dark, vampire-filled world of this legendary vampire hunter, with a new release planned for 2026.
Unified Pictures revealed at WonderCon that they’re creating a 20-issue comic book series based on Vampire Hunter D. The comic will adapt the original novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi and Yoshitaka Amano, expanding on stories not yet fully explored in the animated films. The project is led by writer Brandon Easton (known for Iyanu) and artist Ryan Benjamin (Captain America, Batman), and Unified Pictures has shared a preview page offering a first look at the return of Vampire Hunter D.

Vampire Hunter D Will Rise From The Grave

The story of Vampire Hunter D began as a novel in 1983, and the first anime movie came out two years later. It recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. Fans are disappointed there haven’t been any new anime adaptations, especially since the book series has continued for decades, now totaling over fifty novels. Despite past rumors, nothing has been confirmed, and Bloodlust remains the last time we’ve seen the character, the son of Dracula, animated.
Following the success of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, the character D has continued to appear in various forms of media, including manga, audio dramas, and video games, solidifying his place as a beloved anime vampire hunter. With the increasing popularity of supernatural anime like Dandadan and Jujutsu Kaisen, a return for D seems likely. Even though only two anime movies have been made, D’s story remains important to the anime world.
Comics in North America are increasingly drawing inspiration from anime and manga, and we’re even starting to see characters from both worlds team up. For instance, the Avengers have battled the Titans from Attack on Titan, and Deadpool has joined forces with All Might from My Hero Academia. As manga’s popularity grows in America and globally, expect even more exciting collaborations and crossovers in the future.
