Mary Jane Watson is now the latest host of Venom, and with her identity revealed, she’s fully committed to being a symbiote-powered hero. However, it’s proving challenging. Symbiotes are currently wanted by the government organization S.C.A.R., which intends to capture them all by any means necessary. On top of that, MJ is navigating personal issues – she recently broke up with her boyfriend Paul, realizing she was only with him out of fear of getting hurt, and her friend Dylan is furious and doesn’t want anything to do with Venom after learning MJ is the new host.
MJ and Venom unexpectedly team up to defend their city, both questioning if they truly deserve to be considered heroes. When they encounter a familiar Spider-Man villain, they realize the best way to win is to act like Spider-Man – and Venom even sports a new red and blue suit as they declare themselves the Wall-Crawler!
A New Spider In Town

The trouble began when MJ was filming a carpet cleaner commercial and spotted Blue Streak escaping the police. Knowing Venom was the city’s most wanted criminal, she cleverly disguised herself as Iron Man and chased after him on rollerblades. However, both she and Blue Streak were surprised by Doctor Octopus, who had secretly become the leader of S.C.A.R. and ambushed them with his robotic arms. At the same time, a new superhero team – Rick Jones and Toxin, calling themselves Captain Spider – successfully stopped Blue Streak.
Captain Spider intentionally distracted Doc Ock, and during the resulting fight, MJ and Venom discussed how to help. They decided they needed to join the battle, but couldn’t risk anyone discovering Venom’s identity – especially after Madame Masque already figured it out. They needed a disguise to avoid being traced back to Mary Jane. MJ realized Doc Ock, despite having government backing, wasn’t popular with the public. People generally don’t support villains with octopus arms, so their plan was to turn public opinion against Doc Ock and his followers.

MJ believed the key was to present a trustworthy, heroic image to the public. She decided on a hero familiar to both herself and Venom – the one this entire situation was truly about, even though neither had said it aloud. Realizing it was time to reveal who originally inspired their journeys toward heroism, the new Venom dramatically appeared with a completely updated appearance. They wore a red and blue suit featuring a stretched-out black spider design, and announced themselves as Spider-Man.
Brand New Spider-Man on a Long-Awaited Character Arc
MJ and Venom are currently acting as Spider-Man to try and defeat Doctor Octopus. While these changes aren’t meant to last, they represent something significant for both of them. Throughout their journey, Spider-Man has been more than just a hero; he’s been a symbol of heroism itself. He’s shown MJ what it means to be a true hero and helped Venom overcome his inner darkness and find a better path.
MJ and Venom’s connection ultimately centers around Spider-Man, though neither acknowledges it directly. Venom hurt MJ because he resented Peter Parker’s rejection, and sharing a link with the symbiote has given MJ a new understanding of the challenges Peter faces as Spider-Man. Both are clearly benefiting from Spider-Man’s influence, suggesting they’re overcoming their conflicts and becoming heroes in their own right. For MJ, this progress is especially significant, marking the first crucial step towards repairing her fractured relationship with Peter.
Many fans still haven’t forgiven MJ for leaving Peter for Paul, and that past mistake, combined with previous storylines they disliked, has led some to completely lose faith in her character. However, MJ has since ended things with Paul and is now demonstrating heroic qualities she’s long admired in Peter. By facing similar challenges as a hero, and experiencing the constant scrutiny Peter deals with, she’s gaining a deeper understanding of him and rebuilding their connection. This journey of growth and heroism is ultimately how she’s working to win back the fans’ favor.
