Voice Actress Reveals Secrets Behind Loulan’s Stunning Transformation in Season 2!

The Apothecary Diaries wrapped up its second season in July 2025 following a run of two cours since the Winter 2025 anime season. Whereas the first season subtly hinted at Suirei’s plans to assassinate the Imperial Brother, the focus shifted to the Shi Clan’s rebellion in the second season. However, the story takes an unexpected turn in the last phase of Season 2 when Jinshi emerges as the leader of the resistance against the Shi Clan. Since the Emperor is unable to leave the capital, it is only the Crown Prince who can take his place – the one next in line for the throne. While the second season delved into Jinshi’s internal conflicts concerning his true identity and feelings for Maomao, another character found her moment in the spotlight amidst the turmoil.

Initially, when Loulan debuted, it was unlikely that she’d have such a significant impact on Season 2. She appeared to simply occupy the vacant position of the Pure Consort, but as events unfolded, Loulan proved to be an engaging character. At Anime Expo 2025, which took place during the first week of July, Asami Seto, Loulan’s voice actor, shared her insights on portraying this captivating role.

During a discussion at the Expo (as reported by Oricon), Seto expressed that his instructions were to maintain an upbeat atmosphere. It’s evident to the audience that Loulan and Shisui have distinct personalities, and this difference was deliberate.

In addition, she mentioned that when portraying Loulan, she emphasized a deep sense of intent. Regarding Shisui, although she has hidden intentions, she strived to make the interactions with Maomao and Xiaolan reflect her genuine emotions. Her goal was to depict that the smiles shown in those scenes were sincere rather than insincere.

At the Expo, Aoi Yuki, Maomao’s voice actor, offered her perspective on the duo’s dynamic, stating, “Performing alongside Seto-chan felt remarkably like the bond between Maomao and Shisui. Instead of intentionally portraying it, we simply immersed ourselves in the atmosphere. We established a harmonious space between the characters.

It wasn’t until later in the series that it was discovered Loulan, who had been sneaking out of her pavilion and posing as a servant girl, was actually the same person as Shisui, who debuted in the first episode of Season 2. Friendly with Maomao and Xiaolan from their very first encounter, Shisui’s lively personality contrasted starkly with the sophisticated demeanor expected of Loulan, the only legitimate daughter of the noble Shi Clan. This unexpected duality left many in the show unaware that such a free-spirited individual could be a member of the distinguished Shi family.

Loulan acted without a specific reason; she yearned for a brief taste of liberation from her constraining existence. During this time, she established unique connections within the Rear Palace, which essentially functioned as her prison. She was the first genuine friend Maomao had, even though the girl found it challenging to articulate their relationship. When the Shi Clan’s uprising fell short, there was no one else Loulan trusted more than Maomao, emphasizing the depth of their bond.
