Wait, Why Didn’t Steve Rogers Become The Mighty Thor in Avengers: Endgame?

In Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers, as Captain America, was finally able to lift Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. However, unlike Jane Foster in Thor: Love and Thunder, this didn’t transform him into a version of Thor. Throughout the earlier Marvel films, known as the Infinity Saga, there were hints that Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evans) might be able to wield the enchanted hammer. When he finally did lift it in the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame, it was a particularly iconic moment, but recently another character has used Mjolnir with a different outcome.

Fans first saw a hint of Captain America’s potential with Mjolnir in Avengers: Age of Ultron – the magical hammer that only the worthy can lift – when it slightly moved as Steve Rogers tried to pick it up. This moment came to fruition in Avengers: Endgame, where Rogers successfully wielded the hammer from Asgard during the battle against Thanos while Thor used his axe, Stormbreaker. However, in Thor: Love and Thunder, Jane Foster received power enhancements from Mjolnir, but Captain America did not.

Captain America Didn’t Become Mighty Thor When Wielding Mjolnir (Like Jane Foster)

In Thor: Love and Thunder, Jane Foster learned she had cancer and began searching for a way to heal herself, which led her to New Asgard. Surprisingly, her hammer, Mjolnir – which had been destroyed by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok – reassembled itself when she was near and transformed her into the Mighty Thor. While wielding Mjolnir temporarily suppressed her cancer, it also gave her Thor’s powers, allowing her to battle Gorr the God Butcher. This raised a question for fans: if Mjolnir could grant powers like this, why didn’t Steve Rogers receive them when he wielded the hammer in Endgame?

In Avengers: Endgame, when Steve Rogers was finally able to lift Mjolnir, he gained the ability to summon lightning, a power strongly associated with Thor since 2011. However, unlike Jane Foster, Rogers didn’t experience any other changes or become more powerful in a general sense. It might seem odd that Foster receives additional enhancements in Thor: Love and Thunder while Rogers doesn’t in Endgame, but there’s a simple reason why the hammer affects them differently.

Why Didn’t Steve Rogers’ Captain America Become Mighty Thor in Avengers: Endgame?

I was so fascinated by the backstory they showed in Thor: Love and Thunder! It turns out, when Thor and Jane Foster were together, he actually asked Mjolnir to always protect her. What’s incredible is that seemingly small request changed the magic on the hammer itself! That’s why Mjolnir reformed and flew to Jane in Love and Thunder, even though she wasn’t traditionally considered worthy. It’s a really neat distinction – Captain America being able to wield Mjolnir wasn’t because of any enchantment, but simply because he was worthy all along. It really highlights how special their connection was!

Mjolnir drastically altered Jane Foster’s body and granted her powers, temporarily relieving her cancer – a result of the hammer responding to Thor’s desire to protect her. Unlike Captain America, who was simply deemed worthy enough to lift Mjolnir without any personal changes, Foster wasn’t considered worthy. However, the hammer imbued her with Thor-like abilities, allowing her to handle its power and fight her illness. This is similar to how other worthy individuals like Vision, Hela, and Odin were able to wield Mjolnir without undergoing any physical transformations.

Who Else Could Be Worthy to Wield Mjolnir in the MCU?

After receiving Mjolnir back at the end of Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor is currently wielding the hammer again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role in Avengers: Doomsday (coming in 2026), it’s unknown if his character will have Mjolnir or Stormbreaker, as Taylor Hemsworth’s Love hasn’t been confirmed for the film. If Thor uses Stormbreaker, Mjolnir could be used by other heroes in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, alongside Vision, who is also returning in 2026.

There’s a chance Chris Evans might reprise his role as Captain America, potentially allowing him to lift Thor’s hammer again. Meanwhile, upcoming movies like Doomsday and Secret Wars could introduce Beta Ray Bill as a worthy successor to Thor – a character hinted at in Thor: Ragnarok. Ian McKellen will be back as Magneto in Doomsday, and his powers might even allow him to move the hammer using magnetism. Interestingly, both the Hulk and Red Hulk have lifted Mjolnir in space, and in Marvel comics, Loki has also wielded it. With Tom Hiddleston returning in Doomsday, Loki could gain another significant power boost, building on his already impressive abilities from the Multiverse Saga.
