Warner Bros. recently announced some new Harry Potter projects, but the announcements suggest they don’t fully understand what fans really want. While the upcoming Harry Potter TV series on HBO is sparking debate, other plans – like a full-cast audio version and a new interactive experience based on Sorcerer’s Stone – have potential. However, these aren’t the kinds of things fans have been asking for.
Following the conclusion of the main Harry Potter films, Warner Bros. began planning the future of the franchise. While fans eagerly requested spin-off stories, Warner Bros. initially delivered with the Fantastic Beasts series. However, that series ended after only three of the five planned movies. Despite this setback, Warner Bros. has recently started announcing plans for remakes of the original Harry Potter books. Many fans are still hoping for the spin-off stories they originally requested.
Warner Bros Doesn’t Seem To Understand What Went Wrong With Fantastic Beasts
Warner Bros. hasn’t made any more Harry Potter spin-offs since Fantastic Beasts underperformed, which suggests they haven’t figured out what went wrong with those films. It’s not a lack of audience interest; the Fantastic Beasts movies simply weren’t clear about their direction. A lighthearted story about Newt Scamander and his magical creatures is one type of film, while a backstory focused on Dumbledore is another. Trying to combine those two approaches proved unsuccessful.
Dumbledore wasn’t a major part of the Fantastic Beasts series until the second film, meaning his own backstory wasn’t the main focus. By spreading the story across so many characters, the films didn’t deliver the stories fans had anticipated for years. After three movies, the highly anticipated duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald still hadn’t happened, which ultimately led fans to lose interest in the series.
As a big movie fan, I think there are so many reasons why the Fantastic Beasts films didn’t quite take off. They seemed to be trying to appeal to older audiences, which meant fewer people were watching. Then there was the whole situation with Johnny Depp being replaced in Secrets of Dumbledore – even though J.K. Rowling had said that wouldn’t happen! Honestly, there’s a long list of issues, but it seems Warner Bros. has decided that audiences just really want stories set during Harry’s time at Hogwarts, and that’s that.
The Best We Can Do Is Hope For More Harry Potter Spinoffs After These New Versions
While Fantastic Beasts partially addressed fans’ desire for more stories in the Harry Potter universe, it wasn’t quite what they hoped for, and unfortunately, it seems to have discouraged Warner Bros. from making any further spinoffs. Many fans are still eager to see a proper prequel focusing on Dumbledore’s life, ideally starting with his school years and ending with his battle against Grindelwald. A series about the Marauders, or even a story dedicated to Lord Voldemort’s origins, would also be incredibly popular.
There’s still a chance we might see more spin-off stories eventually. But realistically, Warner Bros. will probably wait to see if the Harry Potter franchise continues to be profitable. If the new Harry Potter TV show, audiobook, and immersive experience are successful, then we could finally get more stories. However, if these projects don’t do well, Warner Bros. might misinterpret what Harry Potter fans really want, and we might not see any further adaptations.
