Warner Bros. Reveals How Many DC Movies Will Release Each Year (Is It Enough?)

With Superman’s successful box office run, the number of upcoming DC movies in theaters each year is now clearer for fans. However, the count might be less than some anticipated. In a letter to Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders (as reported by Deadline), CEO David Zaslav outlined the company’s annual film release plan. Warner Bros. Discovery aims to put out between 12-14 new films annually, with just 1-2 of these being productions from the DC Studios.

In 2021, Superman marked the first theatrical release by DC Studios, making it their sole big-screen debut for the year. As we move forward to 2026, Supergirl and Clayface are the upcoming movies on the schedule. In 2027, eagerly anticipated is the premiere of The Batman Part II, a production that has faced numerous delays but is now preparing to start filming. Despite being set in a different continuity, The Batman Part II falls under the umbrella of DC Studios projects.

As of now, only “The Batman Part II” has been officially scheduled on the calendar for DC films. However, there are several projects at different stages of production, such as “The Brave and the Bold”, a new “Wonder Woman” film, and a new “Superman” movie that James Gunn, one of the co-heads of DC Studios, is currently writing the script for. In his letter, he also mentioned that he’s working on “the next movie in the Super family,” but didn’t provide any specific details about its content.

James Gunn has mentioned that it’s probable that audiences won’t witness prominent Justice League members making their debut in the DC Universe for quite some time. He intends to prevent “The Brave and the Bold” from premiering in the same year as “The Batman Part II.” Moreover, he plans to keep Aquaman and The Flash out of action for a while after they’ve starred in their respective solo films in 2023. He frequently dismisses rumors suggesting DC Studios is currently casting the DCU’s Batman and Wonder Woman, emphasizing that no progress will be made until a script has been finalized.

The amount of movies DC Studios releases each year may vary based on individual perspectives. While some fans might prefer more frequent releases, eagerly anticipating the development of their shared universe towards a Justice League film, others argue that DC Studios could benefit from producing more films, given the potential of numerous characters to headline their own productions. However, it’s also plausible that DC Studios is intentionally limiting itself to just 1-2 movies per year, a strategy that some believe mirrors Marvel Studios’ approach, which has been successful in maintaining viewer satisfaction despite overextending itself following the release of Endgame. Now, Kevin Feige is focusing on quality rather than quantity, and it appears that DC Studios is adopting this philosophy as well.

Each year, a handful of movies (occasionally complemented by series such as “Lanterns”) strikes a balance that pleases both dedicated fans and casual viewers. This quantity ensures DC remains relevant while preventing information overload. Marvel discovered that staying updated with its extensive shared universe felt too much like schoolwork, a situation Gunn aims to avoid. Therefore, it’s no wonder DC Studios intends to limit theatrical releases to 1-2 per year. Gunn’s script guidelines will necessitate time before each project is completed, and we hope this focus on quality will lead to an extremely prosperous collection of films in the future.
