Warner Bros. Tried To Cut 1 Surprise V For Vendetta Scene, Despite Being A Central Plot Point

Warner Bros. initially wanted to remove an important scene from V for Vendetta, but director James McTeigue successfully argued to keep it in the film.

I’m a big fan of V for Vendetta! It’s a really powerful movie, based on the graphic novel, and it follows Evey Hammond as she gets drawn into this incredible fight against a totally controlling government in the UK. She teams up with V, this mysterious guy who wears a mask, and together they try to spark a revolution. Honestly, V isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty – he uses some pretty intense and sometimes questionable tactics to get what he wants, but you understand why he’s fighting.

During a recent interview with ScreenRant to mark the 20th anniversary 4K re-release of the film, director James McTeigue discussed studio interference. He explained that producer Joel Silver shielded him from Warner Bros. during filming, but after the movie was shot, the studio requested he remove a scene showing Evey learning about Valerie Page – a woman imprisoned and experimented on for being a lesbian. McTeigue argued that the scene was crucial to Evey’s development, and Warner Bros. ultimately agreed to keep it in the film. You can find the director’s full comments below.

During filming, the producer, Joel Silver, protected me from studio interference. The studio only asked about removing the scene with the lesbian relationship after the movie was finished. I explained that scene was essential to the character’s development – it was what truly changed her. Thankfully, they agreed and let me keep it in. So, the final cut is exactly what I envisioned. I only made minor edits for pacing and timing; I didn’t have to fight to preserve the story I wanted to tell.

I’ve been so moved by Valerie’s story – it’s a truly powerful account of her coming out, finding love with a woman, and sharing all the struggles and joys she experienced. It’s incredible how her words resonate throughout V for Vendetta, especially because, as the director explained, it’s Valerie’s journey that really transforms Evey. It gives Evey the courage to stand up against injustice and, most importantly, to embrace freedom without being held back by fear. It’s a story that’s truly stayed with me.

Back in the mid-2000s, LGBTQ+ characters weren’t commonly featured in popular movies and TV shows. This probably explains why Warner Bros. was unsure about including a particular scene and considered cutting it. Removing the scene, however, would have meant losing important representation, significantly altering a character’s journey, and weakening the film’s message about the importance of living truthfully.

In a review for ScreenRant, Grant Hermanns calls V for Vendetta “one of the most insightful and disturbingly relevant comic book movies ever made,” noting that many of the hateful beliefs held by the film’s authoritarian government are still sadly common today. The oppression of Valerie and others for their sexuality highlights the film’s powerful message about the dangers of fascism. Without this impactful storyline, V for Vendetta would be a very different film and wouldn’t have had the same lasting impact.
