Streaming now on both Disney+ and Hulu, “Washington Black” has its second episode dedicated to a cherished cast member who tragically passed away during the series’ filming process.
In the show, Kamar de los Reyes portrays Captain Alvarez, a man caught in conflict, encountering characters like Wash (played by Eddie Karanja) and the quirky inventor Titch (performed by Tom Ellis), as they navigate dangerous chasers.
Spending time on the ship turns out to be far from enjoyable for Titch, as he’s jailed under suspicion of espionage and forced to labor tirelessly on repairs, all while dealing with scarce resources and lacking extensive understanding of the ship.
Captain Alvarez’s final performance was recorded by De los Reyes before his death from cancer on December 24th, 2023, at the age of 56.
Washington Black episode 2 tribute explained: Who was Kamar de los Reyes?

Kamar de los Reyes gained fame primarily as an actor, recognized for his performances in the soap opera “One Life to Live”, the supernatural drama “Sleepy Hollow”, the popular detective show “The Rookie”, and the sports-themed series “All American”.
More recently, he made a posthumous appearance in Daredevil: Born Again, portraying Hector Ayala, also known as White Tiger. This character is well-known for being one of the early Hispanic superheroes to appear in American comics.
The screenwriter went on, still amazed by it, “It leaves a profound impact on me even now. And as I reflect, it’s mind-blowing to realize that he must have been aware of the events unfolding in his life, concerning his health.
…”Additionally, he portrays a character whose destiny appears uncertain, but it’s reasonable to infer that he likely disembarks from the ship… to meet his conclusion.
Hinds reflected: “During filming, those scenes left us all feeling quite unsettled, and now it makes sense why. He portrayed the character’s impending doom with such authenticity, it was chilling.
He went on to say, “That’s what I’ll keep in mind.” He mentioned that he would recall the image of him, smartly dressed in his uniform, saluting the crew and leaving the ship – an image that will stay with him for all time.
From the Reyes family, his children three and wife, Sherri Saum – an accomplished actress recognized for her performances in The Fosters, Good Trouble, and Netflix’s Locke & Key – were left behind after his passing.
Washington Black is available to stream on Disney+.
