Jon Bernthal, in an impassioned and colorful speech, celebrated the completion of filming for his forthcoming “The Punisher” Special Presentation. While working on the first season of “Daredevil: Born Again,” which brought back Bernthal as the brutal vigilante Frank Castle from Netflix’s “Daredevil” and “The Punisher” series, Bernthal came up with a concept for a new special centered around the Punisher within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Joining forces with Academy Award-nominated Reinaldo Marcus Green, they collaborated on co-writing and co-directing this upcoming Special Presentation, which was recently filmed prior to its scheduled release in 2026.
Jon Bernthal expressed his strong conviction during a speech marking the end of filming for The Punisher’s Special Presentation (via @stevesandsync on Instagram). He stated, ‘With heart, belief, teamwork, and love, the impossible can indeed be achieved.’ This project, he emphasized, was particularly challenging but they managed to pull it off. He also referred to the location as a magical place where everyone poured their hearts out. Lastly, he acknowledged the hard work of the Special Presentation’s crew, especially director Reinaldo Marcus Green, who played a crucial role in bringing Jon Bernthal’s vision for the TV special to fruition.
Initially appearing as Frank Castle (the Punisher) during the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil, Jon Bernthal’s character gained significant popularity and eventually led to a standalone series titled The Punisher. This show premiered in 2017, with a second season following in 2019. It wasn’t until early 2024 that it was confirmed the Defenders Saga falls within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which allowed Bernthal to revisit his role as the Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again. Here, he joined forces with Matt Murdock, played by Charlie Cox, to combat the Anti-Vigilante Task Force. Their efforts resulted in the Punisher’s imprisonment at the Red Hook facility run by the Kingpin (portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio). However, a hint of his escape was subtly suggested.
The special presentation of “The Punisher” is anticipated to debut on Disney+ concurrently with the second season of “Daredevil: Born Again” in 2026 as part of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 6. This marks Frank Castle’s upcoming appearance, scheduled for July 2026 in the movie “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” The special presentation is said to feature a confrontation between Frank Castle and Ma Gnucci and the Gnucci crime family, classic adversaries of Punisher from Marvel Comics. This story promises to be the most realistic and mature Punisher journey to date, with its TV-MA rating and Bernthal’s dedication and enthusiasm for the character contributing significantly.
Actor Jon Bernthal will work alongside Roe Rancell (known from “For Colored Girls” and “Brightest Star”), who will portray the character Dennis, and Jason R. Moore (familiar from “First Kill” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”) is set to return as Curtis Hoyle from his role in “The Punisher”. Recent set glimpses have revealed thrilling action scenes and a fresh look for Frank Castle’s new Punisher outfit, generating anticipation for this Special Presentation. As of now, the release date for the special edition of “The Punisher” is unconfirmed, but with filming completed, we can expect more details to be shared soon.
