The new TV drama Watson is beginning its second season in fall 2025, and it’s already expanding on the stories of Sherlock Holmes. In fact, Sherlock Holmes himself appears in the very first episode! It’s likely John Watson will be much more pleased to see Sherlock back – having seemingly returned from the dead – than he was to encounter the villain Moriarty in the first season. However, their reunion won’t be simple. Before his full debut on October 20th, actor Robert Carlyle discussed with TopMob what it’s like playing the iconic detective and how his character will reconnect with Morris Chestnut’s John Watson.
Although Carlyle first appeared briefly in the Season 2 premiere (now streaming on Paramount+), his full introduction as Watson comes in the October 20th episode, titled “Back From the Dead.” This episode explains what Sherlock has been up to and shows Watson reconnecting with his friend while they investigate a dangerous “zombie virus” that threatens widespread chaos.
Aside from “zombie virus” sounding like the perfect case for one of the last Watson episodes before Halloween, this episode that will show fans what John and Sherlock’s relationship is actually like after only hearing stories (and getting some auditory hallucinations) in Season 1. Acknowledging that it’s “very strange,” Robert Carlyle previewed what kind of a reunion it will be for the friends after Sherlock took John by surprise:
It’s really strange how the episode unfolds. He doesn’t immediately explain what happened, offering no apology or explanation for his actions. It takes the whole episode for viewers to piece together the events at Reichenbach Falls from a year earlier. Keeping that information hidden feels deliberately suspicious, at least to me.
Sherlock Holmes fans, don’t anticipate a simple explanation from Sherlock about what happened after his apparent death at Reichenbach Falls! While his return won’t be quite as shocking as Moriarty’s reveal last season, an actor from Once Upon a Time hinted that there will be some initial tension and questions among his friends.
Watson is understandably cautious about this person reappearing, and it raises a lot of questions. We’re left wondering who he is, what his true nature is, and even if he’s real. From Watson’s perspective, he seems genuine, but as the story unfolds, the truth about their connection becomes a mystery, much like a Sherlock Holmes case.
It’s unclear if we’ll see other familiar faces cross paths with Sherlock soon, but I’m particularly hoping for a scene between Robert Carlyle and Rochelle Aytes. I’d love to see if Mary still resents Sherlock for Watson’s extended time away in Pittsburgh. So far, the show seems to be concentrating on Watson’s story, and that may continue in future episodes.

The way Sherlock first reappeared suggests he was very comfortable with John. He seemed confident enough in John’s reaction that he simply showed up at his apartment and started looking through the fridge. Robert Carlyle explained this scene as Sherlock’s way of re-entering John’s life after being presumed dead.
It really highlights how close these two characters are. This season, we’re aiming to subtly show their long-standing, strong friendship. The scene with him grabbing horseradish and a sandwich from the fridge perfectly captures that comfortable, roommate-like dynamic – it’s just what you’d expect from close friends or flatmates, especially when they’re in university. It’s a nice, natural way to introduce their relationship.
As a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes, I always loved the dynamic between Sherlock and Watson as roommates – it’s a really charming part of the original stories. But after a year of no contact and John dealing with what he thought was Sherlock’s death, I was really curious about how their relationship would be when they finally reconnected. Robert Carlyle, who plays Moriaty, actually addressed this directly, explaining…
It’s a great point. Watson is clearly suspicious of this new character. It’s not so much Sherlock himself that worries him, but rather what Sherlock has been up to and why he’s returned. Watson bombards him with questions, but Sherlock tends to avoid answering directly, which only creates more confusion. It’s like a puzzle wrapped in another puzzle.
It’s been almost three months since Robert Carlyle was announced as Sherlock Holmes, and fans are eager to see how his chemistry with Watson plays out in this new adaptation! Here’s a preview of their first episode together.
Don’t miss the “Back From the Dead” episode of Watson on CBS, Monday, October 20th at 10 p.m. Eastern! See Robert Carlyle’s performance and, if you missed it, watch his surprising first appearance—the premiere is available to stream on Paramount+.
