We Got To See RRR’s S.S. Rajamouli Drop A First Look At His Next Movie During A Massive Event In India, And My Mind Is Blown

Just a few years ago, RRR exploded onto the scene and became a massive hit. The Telugu-language film from Tollywood resonated with audiences worldwide, breaking numerous Indian cinema records and even winning an Oscar for Best Original Song. Now, director S.S. Rajamouli is aiming for even greater success with his next project, Varanasi, and the first glimpses look fantastic!

TopMob recently attended a huge fan event in India – with estimates ranging from 40,000 to 50,000 attendees – and got a first look at Rajamouli’s new film while it was being filmed in Hyderabad. We saw the impressive initial footage featuring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Manash Babu, and the energy surrounding the project is incredible. This film feels like a major step towards bringing Indian cinema to a worldwide audience!

We got to attend an event called Globetrotter, which was the working title for Rajamouli’s new film. During the event, the movie’s official title, Varanasi, was revealed. It was held outdoors at Ramoji Film City, and the first trailer was shown on a giant screen measuring 100 by 132 feet. Rajamouli spoke to the excited crowd and announced the movie is being filmed for IMAX, even showing a preview image in a specific widescreen format.

Details about the story of Varanasi are still limited, but a trailer was recently released, so you can get a first look now. Check it out here:

The film Varanasi immediately captivates with stunning visuals, beginning with a montage of landscapes spanning different eras. The visual effects are truly beautiful and suggest a richly developed world. During the reveal event, Indian audiences enthusiastically celebrated the first look at Mahesh Babu’s character, Rudhra.

Babu is widely known as the “Prince of Tollywood,” and his popularity was clear at the Globetrotter event. The audience enthusiastically reacted whenever his name was mentioned or his image appeared on screen. Director Rajamouli and co-star Priyanka Chopra Jonas, another major Indian star, both spoke about him with great admiration and enthusiasm. Although Chopra Jonas isn’t in the trailer, a glimpse of her character was shared at the event, and a dedicated poster was revealed.

At the event, they also revealed some details about the movie’s villain, named Kumbha, who will be played by Prithviraj Sukumaran. Sukumaran himself said playing Kumbha is the most physically and emotionally demanding role of his career. The villain’s poster shows him using a wheelchair and sporting at least four robotic arms.

The film featured a vibrant song and dance performance by popular actress Shruti Haasan, giving the audience a preview of the movie’s music. A couple of other dance numbers were also included as a sneak peek.

The event’s grand scale was evident in the fact that the full trailer didn’t play perfectly on the first try. Director Rajamouli shared that they hadn’t tested the footage beforehand because someone tried to leak it using a drone – it’s amazing how much excitement the trailer reveal generated! Having been there, I’m not sure Hollywood could create a similar experience. The level of energy was comparable to a concert for artists like Beyoncé or Taylor Swift.

The event showcased incredible energy, especially surrounding Varanasi, making this film one to watch. Rajamouli is aiming for something huge with his next project, clearly targeting a worldwide audience. It’s possible this film could even surpass RRR in scope and impact.
