We Need To Talk About Daredevil: Born Again’s Cherry

The second season of Daredevil: Born Again continues to underutilize one character, but there’s still a chance to improve things. The Disney+ revival of the Charlie Cox-led series introduced several new faces, including Clark Pitts, known as Cherry, played by Clark Johnson. Cherry is a former NYPD detective now working as a private investigator at Matt Murdock’s law firm with Kirsten McDuffie. He was one of the few people who knew Matt was Daredevil, and their relationship became important in Season 2, as he provided crucial information while Matt was hiding from Wilson Fisk.

Though he’s officially an ally of Daredevil, many viewers haven’t been impressed with the character Cherry in the Daredevil: Born Again series. Most find him uninteresting and poorly developed, particularly when compared to the other characters. Some viewers even said his scenes felt slow and boring, especially next to the exciting conflict between Daredevil and Mayor Fisk.

Cherry mainly serves to connect the dots in the Daredevil: Born Again storyline, acting as a temporary element rather than a well-rounded character. He doesn’t have a strong personality, and as a result, he doesn’t really stand out.

In Season 2, the show tried to increase the danger for the character Cherry by having the Anti-Vigilante Task Force raid his home and aggressively question him. This led to him suffering a heart attack while Daredevil was trying to save him.

Honestly, that whole scene felt a bit off to me. It definitely made me fear for the character, but it seemed less about him and more about reminding us of Matt’s pain over losing Foggy. I wish we’d seen more of this character grappling with his own choices and regretting getting involved with Daredevil – you know, some internal conflict. Thankfully, Bullseye showed up just when things were about to get really bad, which was a relief!

Although the show’s new characters generally improved from season one to two, many viewers and critics felt that Cherry’s character arc didn’t develop enough. This made him a weaker part of the show, even though the second season was otherwise strong.

It’s disappointing to see a talented director and actor like Clark Johnson – with a career spanning over 100 acting roles and nearly 100 directing credits, including an Emmy nomination – given such an underwhelming part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

How Daredevil: Born Again Can Fix Cherry’s Portrayal 

Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again attempted to redeem the character of Cherry by giving him a strong storyline from the beginning, but this felt artificial to many viewers. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to make him a particularly memorable part of what was otherwise a solid return to gritty, street-level Marvel storytelling.

Currently, Cherry’s story is heavily tied to Matt Murdock. If Matt makes it through Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, the show has a great chance to develop Cherry’s character further in the planned Season 3. A good way to do this would be to show more of Cherry’s life outside of work and his connection to Matt, giving him a more independent story.

Season 2 set the stage by showing us some of Cherry’s fellow officers, both current and from his past. Now, putting one of his close friends in trouble could make him face the difficult reality of working with a vigilante. This would be great for his character, exposing his deep regret for involving innocent people in a dangerous conflict.

This kind of story arc would give Cherry more depth, turning him from a simple character into someone burdened by real regret. Viewers would finally get a glimpse into his inner thoughts and see his increasing worry that he’s contributing to the issues at hand. This would explain why he becomes so fiercely protective of the people he cares about most.
