Even though the main Final Fantasy series is nearing its seventeenth installment, there haven’t been many direct sequels – despite numerous spin-off titles. A particularly beloved game in the series is ripe for a follow-up, and recent clues suggest one might finally be in development.
The Final Fantasy series is incredibly popular, and right now, Final Fantasy 14 and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake are the most talked-about games. Fans have been waiting for the next major Final Fantasy title, but Square Enix seems happy to update older games instead of creating new ones. This would be a great moment to finally make a sequel to the beloved PS1 game, Final Fantasy Tactics.
Final Fantasy Tactics Desperately Needs A Sequel
I absolutely love Final Fantasy Tactics. It’s a game where you really have to think strategically, but it’s not just about the battles – it’s got this huge, epic story too. You play as Ramza Beoulve, who’s basically a noble’s kid caught in the middle of a political mess. He has to decide what he believes in, even if it means going against his own family, and it’s a really compelling story.
Despite making several games inspired by Final Fantasy Tactics and a large collaboration with Final Fantasy 14, a true sequel to the original game hasn’t been released.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Set Up A Future Sequel
In 2025, Square Enix released a remastered version of Final Fantasy Tactics, called Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. This new version featured updated graphics, full voice acting, and several improvements to make the game more user-friendly. While it didn’t add a lot of new gameplay, it did include short scenes that expanded on the relationships between characters.
While The Ivalice Chronicles largely revisited familiar ground, it did include some new content, most notably a revised ending. This version finally explained how Ramza survived the final battle – a question left unanswered in the original PlayStation game – and added a scene showing him discussing his future with his sister.
Yasumi Matsuno, the creator of Final Fantasy Tactics, has hinted on social media that the recently added ending content for The Ivalice Chronicles might set up a new game. This potential sequel could continue the story of Ramza as he lives in exile from Ivalice.
A new game starring the descendants of the Beoulve family is also a possibility, bringing the story back to Ivalice after Delita’s rule. There’s a lot of potential for a Final Fantasy Tactics 2. Given the success of The Ivalice Chronicles, a sequel that fans have been waiting for might finally happen.
