The Netflix series “Wednesday” has exploded into pop culture, shattering streaming records and enchanting a wide audience with its eerie allure. This surge in popularity has not only catapulted Jenna Ortega into mainstream fame but also revitalized the entire Addams Family franchise. In response to this success, Netflix is placing big bets on the show’s continued success, greenlighting a third season before the second one has even finished airing, and they are also working on a spinoff featuring Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen). The renewed love for all things Addams isn’t just limited to television. Leaning into the brand’s comeback, creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have been chosen to direct an animated movie reboot of the quirky and chilling family, as announced in the “Crew Call” podcast by Deadline.
We’re collaborating on a fresh take for the Addams Family animated film series. This partnership includes Amazon MGM, Kevin Miserocchi from the Addams Foundation – who was close with Charles Addams and continues to carry on his legacy – Gail Berman, and John Glickman. Unlike the previous films or the current show, this new feature will be an entirely original Addams Family story. At this point, we can’t reveal many details because it’s still in its early development stages.
The simultaneous release of a Netflix series and an Amazon MGM movie based on the Addams Family demonstrates the significant commercial worth of this intellectual property, setting it apart among franchises that can sustain parallel adaptations by various major studios. By mentioning Kevin Miserocchi and the Addams Foundation in the project’s debut announcement, the creators are emphasizing that this new film will be a faithful adaptation of the characters. This approach implies a thoughtful plan to keep the new project consistent with Charles Addams’ original concept, making the Addams Foundation’s active participation a key element of the film’s identity from the outset.
The Addams Family’s Long Theatrical History
The Addams Family originated in the comic strips of The New Yorker magazine and was later popularized by the 1960s TV series. However, their journey onto the big screen started in the early 1990s. Barry Sonnenfeld’s movie “The Addams Family,” released in 1991, was their first appearance on the big screen, and it, along with its sequel “Addams Family Values” from 1993, has been considered iconic for many. The cast, including Raul Julia as Gomez, Anjelica Huston as Morticia, Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester, and a young Christina Ricci as Wednesday, were spot-on in capturing the dark humor and gothic style of their original portrayals.
After Julia’s unfortunate demise in 1994, Paramount Pictures decided against creating another theatrical film, which then led to the relatively overlooked and critically panned “Addams Family Reunion” in 1998. This was a direct-to-video movie made by Saban Entertainment, initially meant as a trial for a new television show titled “The New Addams Family”. Unfortunately, the film didn’t resonate well and is mostly remembered as an inferior copy that lacked the cleverness and charm found in the Sonnenfeld movies.
In a refreshing return after some time away, the Addams family made a comeback on screen in 2019 with the animated film “The Addams Family.” A sequel, “The Addams Family 2,” followed in 2021. Produced by MGM, these movies aimed to attract a younger audience while staying true to the original New Yorker comic style through a more cartoonish appearance. The films garnered mixed reviews but were moderately successful at the box office, demonstrating the lasting charm of the characters. Now, Gough and Millar have the chance to create an entirely new animated version that aspires to recapture the same enchantment and elegance that characterized their live-action predecessors.
On Netflix, you can now stream the first half of Season 2 for the show “Wednesday”, and Part 2 will be released on September 3, 2025.
