Enthusiasts of gothic mysteries and fantasies have been thrilled by everything that the show “Wednesday” has offered so far. This innovative series has reintroduced a timeless family, with some subtle adjustments added for good measure. While the story primarily focuses on Wednesday Addams, several other family members have made appearances. What’s even more exciting is that Season 2 has provided more opportunities for these characters to stick around. So far, we haven’t encountered Cousin Itt yet, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a guest appearance. Fans are also eagerly anticipating updates on Ophelia Frump, leading us to one of the characters that “Wednesday” has significantly transformed: Grandmama.
Viewers of the original Addams Family TV series may recall a rather unique portrayal of Grandmama. Unlike her onscreen persona, Grandmama was known for her offbeat personality, with an affinity for fortune-telling, knives, and brewing potions. Despite being referred to as Grandmama within the family, she is undeniably an Addams at heart, serving as mother to Gomez and Morticia.
The Grandmama of Wednesday

It’s possible that the depiction of Grandmama you’re thinking of isn’t the one you may recognize, particularly if your impression is based solely on her appearance in the series Wednesday. In this show, Grandmama, portrayed by Joanna Lumley, is known for her immense wealth. However, unlike previous perceptions, she’s eccentric in a more refined and calculated manner. She exudes confidence and an air of superiority. Additionally, she maintains emotional detachment, often seeming indifferent to the world and her family, as if treating them like pieces on a game board.
In my humble opinion as a movie critic, let me tell you about the intriguing character of Grandmama in the show “Wednesday.” This isn’t your typical Grandmama Addams – she’s none other than Hester Frump, the shrewd proprietor of Frump Mortuaries. As a cold-blooded businesswoman with deep pockets, her significant role in “Wednesday” Season 2 is anything but unexpected. It seems that quite a few individuals are keen on their hands on Grandmama’s substantial wealth. What makes this character even more captivating is the fact that she’s not an Addams by blood, offering a fresh twist to the dynamics we’re accustomed to in the Addams family saga.
Grandmama Is Becoming a Central Figure

Although Grandmama has had limited screen time (up to this point), the series subtly hints at her significant future influence. She seems primed to take over Goody Addams’ role as Wednesday’s mentor, unless a certain character stages a surprising comeback. Her wealth has been mentioned on multiple occasions and her manipulative behavior has been suggested in various instances. Additionally, her possible involvement in Ophelia Frump’s vanishing is another intriguing plot point to consider.
In simpler terms, Grandmama Frump comes across as emotionally distant and contentious, further straining an already fragile mother-daughter bond between Morticia and herself. For Morticia, her actions couldn’t be more ill-timed, but for viewers, they provide an intriguing twist. We can’t wait to see how this enigmatic and fascinating character develops in the second part of Wednesday Season 2.
Wednesday is available to stream on Netflix.
