Welcome to Derry offers interesting insights into Stephen King’s IT, the film adaptations, and his other stories. While it’s a prequel, the story is far enough removed from the movies to work on its own, yet it still connects significantly to the overall narrative. The book delves into the history of Derry, Maine, and reveals how and when It first appeared as Pennywise, and explores the reasons behind its frequent use of that form.
There are also obvious family ties throughout the story. Most notably, Will Hanlon appears, who will eventually become the father of Mike, one of the Losers Club members. We also know a relative of Stan Uris is present, and Beverly Marsh’s father, Alvin, is mentioned in graffiti at school. But could there be another hidden family connection we’ve overlooked? A popular theory suggests there is, and recent events make it seem much more likely. Please be aware this contains spoilers for IT: Welcome to Derry Season 1, Episode 7.
Is Marge The Mother Of IT’s Richie Tozier?

Throughout the series IT: Welcome to Derry, hints suggest that Marge Truman might be Richie Tozier’s mother. Both Marge and Richie (played by Finn Wolfhard and Bill Hader in the IT films) share similar glasses and a comparable sense of humor. Marge is known for her jokes and impressions, sometimes going a bit too far to get a laugh – a trait that strongly echoes Richie’s personality, earning him the nickname “Trashmouth.”
Before the reveal in Episode 7, a major hint connecting Richie and Marge was their mothers’ shared name: Margaret. In Stephen King’s novel, Richie’s mother is named Maggie, which is short for Margaret (she makes a quick appearance in IT: Chapter Two during Stan’s bar mitzvah). While this could have been a simple coincidence, the tragic events at The Black Spot strongly suggest a deeper connection. There, Marge is saved by Rich Santos, who bravely sacrifices himself to protect her, allowing her to hide in a cooler.

Their heartbreaking final moments, filled with declarations of love, will likely stay with Marge forever. Though she and Rich won’t share a future, she’ll never forget him. It would be a poignant tribute if she named her son after him, adding a deeper layer to Richie’s character in the IT films – revealing not only his resemblance to his mother, but also the sorrowful story behind his name.
This detail connects strongly to the core ideas of IT and Welcome to Derry, which explore how trauma and violence repeat across generations within the Losers’ group, Derry’s families, and the town as a whole – a pattern we also see with the Hanlons and Mrs. Kersh. This makes the inclusion feel meaningful, not just a random reference. Because Maggie Tozier is a relatively small character, it’s easy to integrate this into the established story, adding another tragic dimension to the series.
The season finale of IT: Welcome to Derry will be available on HBO and HBO Max starting Sunday, December 14th, at 9 PM Eastern Time.
