As a die-hard fan of Friends, I can’t help but reflect on the heart-stopping moment when one potential storyline for Ross Gellar, brilliantly portrayed by David Schwimmer, was thankfully scrapped before it saw the light of day in season 7. Ross, being one of the six pivotal characters in this iconic sitcom, had his fair share of comedic trials and tribulations, often finding himself in awkward, tense, or unfortunate predicaments. From his messy divorces to his questionable dating tactics, from professional pressures to unexpected pregnancies (almost taken a step too far), Ross’s journey was a rollercoaster ride that made the show all the more endearing.
In the sixth season of Friends, Ross developed a romantic relationship with a student at his university named Elizabeth (played by Alexandra Holden). This relationship was brief, lasting only five episodes due to its controversial nature. Originally, writers had intended for Elizabeth to stay longer but plans changed. According to CBR in 2015, the sixth season almost ended on a cliffhanger where Ross discovers that Elizabeth is pregnant with his child. If this had happened, the storyline would have been further developed in season 7, which aired between 2000 and 2001.

In the television series Friends, Ross Geller frequently encountered pregnancy-related storylines. His first wife Carol (played by Jane Sibbett) announced her pregnancy in the first season, leading to a prolonged shared parenting arrangement with Carol, Susan (Jessica Hecht), and Ross. Later on, in the eighth season, Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) disclosed her pregnancy to Ross following a one-night stand before Monica (Courteney Cox) and Chandler’s (the late Matthew Perry) wedding. Introducing Elizabeth’s pregnancy would have added more complexity to the situation, as it was intended for Ross to discover that she wasn’t his child by the end of season 7.
It’s clear that the creators of “Friends” made a wise decision by not including a pregnancy storyline between Ross, then aged 32, and Elizabeth, who was 20 at the time. Their relationship was problematic due to Elizabeth’s immaturity being a significant factor in their separation. Introducing a pregnancy would have further highlighted the inappropriateness of this romance. Given that Ross suffered numerous setbacks throughout “Friends’ ten seasons, we’re relieved that on one occasion, he was spared this particular predicament, allowing his past relationship with Elizabeth to remain just that as he rekindled things with Rachel, who was ultimately his destined match.
Ross’ romance with Elizabeth during his “Friends” tenure was a blemish on his journey, for which we are thankful that the creative team opted to quickly move past it. Instead, Ross embarked on a pregnancy storyline with Rachel in season 8, a will-they, won’t-they tale following Rachel moving in with him in season 9, and eventually ended up with Rachel in the emotional climax of “Friends.” If Elizabeth’s pregnancy had progressed, much of this would have been different, making the decision to bypass it entirely the wiser choice.
