We’re Officially 6 Months Away From The First He-Man Movie In Almost 40 Years

As a kid, He-Man was everywhere – a total icon of 80s cartoons and pop culture, and honestly, the character and the world of Eternia still feel incredibly popular today. So, it’s genuinely shocking it’s taken almost 40 years to get a He-Man movie in theaters! But thankfully, that wait is almost over. After a long and somewhat bumpy ride to the big screen, He-Man is finally coming back, and I, for one, couldn’t be more excited to see it happen.

Get ready for a new Masters of the Universe movie hitting theaters on June 5th, 2026! It’s been a long time since the original film with Dolph Lundgren in 1987, and this new version will star Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man. He’ll be joined by a fantastic cast including Idris Elba, Camila Mendes, and Alison Brie. Many attempts have been made to revive the franchise over the years, but this is the one that finally made it to production.

A particularly interesting take on the story came from John Woo, who explored developing a version back in 2007. Given his impressive background and filmmaking style, he could have brought a fresh perspective to Masters of the Universe. However, despite a lot of talk, the project never officially moved forward or received studio approval.

Several attempts were made to get a new film off the ground. In 2009, Sony Pictures hired Mike Finch and Alex Litvak to write a script, with John Stevenson set to direct. However, the writers were later changed to Evan Daugherty, but the project never came to fruition. In 2012, Jon M. Chu was considered as a director and Richard Wenk was brought in to revise the script. Terry Rossio then took over writing duties, but Chu was no longer attached to direct.

The Masters of the Universe movie has had a long and troubled development. Initially, Jeff Wadlow was set to direct and rewrite the script in 2014, followed by Christopher Yost taking on rewriting duties in 2015. In 2016, McG was attached to direct with Kellan Lutz potentially playing He-Man, and a 2019 release date was even set. However, McG eventually left, and David Goyer stepped in to rewrite and direct, but that version of the film also fell through in 2018.

The project then went through several more changes, with Aaron and Adam Nee taking on directing duties and Noah Centineo initially cast as the lead. However, this version also failed to materialize in 2021. Netflix picked up the rights in 2022, feeling confident because of their successful animated series created with Kevin Smith. The live-action adaptation made significant progress, but Netflix ultimately cancelled it in 2023 due to budget issues.

It’s been a long and winding road for Masters of the Universe, but in 2023, a movie is finally happening! And it’s looking good for fans of the original cartoon, as the film is incorporating many elements from the classic series.

The film boasts a fantastic cast, including Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, Camila Mendes as Teela, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafthor Bjornsson as Goat Man, and Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, alongside Galitzine. This combination of iconic characters and talented actors offers great promise. If the movie delivers an exciting adventure with plenty of action, it could launch a successful Masters of the Universe film series.

Masters of the Universe hits theaters on June 5, 2026.
